Virtual TI breaks quarter mil
Posted by Magnus on 15 September 2002, 10:25 GMT

Virtual TI, our top downloaded program of all time, has broken through a quarter of a million downloads! At the statistics count last night, it ended up at 250,009 downloads.

A big congratulations to the author Rusty Wagner - keep up the good work!

Footnote: The second placed program, W32Tran8x, has yet to reach 100,000. For full statistics, check our download statistics.

Yah! Go Rusty! Now you just need to make VTI V200 compatible!

Everyone else, I have successfully deciphered how to change an APP's Certificate ID. Will someone please send me:
1. Geometer's Sketch Pad for TI-89
2. Cabri Geometry for TI-89
3. Organizer for TI-89 (when it comes out)
(all the rest I have or are not in enough demand)

This way I can release the files on my website along with instructions on how to change the ID for your own calculator. I will give any person who sends me these files credit on my site. Thanks!

Well, good job. If this gets deleted then you'll know that Ticalc didn't want this on their server.

Great Job in cracking it. I'll also warn you it's illegal (so I wouldn't post it here).

But since it's here: try cracking EQW.

I bet you could into a lot of trouble for that, but it's really a great idea, in my opinion, and I'll be looking forward to seeing that! >:)

No, it isn't. It's only illegal if you crack software and then USE it illegally, or if you distribute the crack. If you crack a piece of software for educational purposes, then it falls under the Fair Use section of the Copyright Act.

It took me as long as it takes to get out my hex editor and search for my ID in cellsheet.

Did you try changing the ID to someone else's calc and send the app to their calc?

I would suspect that you cannot fool TI's encryption just by changing the ID. From what I've read, they use the ID to generate a key to sign an application with. Your calculator also uses its own ID to generate the public key. The two keys are different and you can't generate either of them since the relevent parts of the Flash chip are read protected.

You might be able to change the ID on the app, but you'd still need to alter whatever part of the app TI encrypted to reflect the changed ID.

I believe you misurderstood me, but nevertheless, I have tested my method, and it is much more complicated than I earlier indicated, in hope that some one would send me some files :(

You do know that by merely talking about that you can be thrown in jail under the terms of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act? Basically it makes circumvention (and instructions/discussion of circumvention) of copy protection illegal. And it goes a little too far: one person was thrown in jail for discussing a program that "spoke" pdf files so that the blind could know what they say. He didn't even write the program to do this, he merely talked about it.

So keep your instructions relatively private until the DMCA is struck down as unconstitutional (shouldn't take more than a year or two).

Also, make sure you didn't violate the terms of TI's End User License Agreement.

DMCA: bad.

Umm, that was Dimitry Skylarov, and he did have some of the software written, except he was working for elcomsoft (a russian software company), and adobe (after slashdot reader outcry) gave up on the case.

The feds didn't stop though.

NOpe, the DMCA is not going to be repealed soon enough.

Please publish how you did it anyway. (even if I don't use it...) And while your at it, let TI know (even if they don't like it, they should know what not to do next time)

There was one guy who worked for HP (though I might be wrong about that) that had planned to break the DMCA publicly and told everyone about it, but HP asked him not to. It would've been nice if HP said "go for it" and covered his legal expenses--that probably would have ended in the DMCA being found unconstitutional.

I had forgotten the details about the guy, but I hadn't thought he'd written any of the program.

He was fired from HP for mentioning that. His plan was to use a black sharpie to defeat the copy protection that thy're starting to use on new audio cd's.

Maybe they got deleted for violating the acceptable use policy (eg. piramids, first post, you know what I mean).
Anyway, congrats to VTI and Rusty Wagner. Too bad VTI doesn't emulate the 83+(SE) properly. Ah well, maybe the 83+ and V200 get added at the same time (hopefully soon of course ;) ).

Mmmm, hmmm. Get an 83+ SE. They are almost as good as an 89, and Bubble Bobble and Gemeni are really fun. (the new SE has a USB link, which is c00l! and 4X faster than Black Link.)
