Texas Instruments Releases AMS v2.03
Posted by Nick on 10 December 1999, 01:10 GMT

AMS v2.03I found that TI released AMS 2.03, wrote a small blurb on ticalc.org as all of you have probably noticed, and then went to download the software. I snagged the whole thing in about 30 seconds on my ISDN line (at 14.6K/s).
The .exe file downloaded, I ran it and saw the WinZip installer we all know and love. I found it interesting that TI didn't put this in an auto-installing .exe, but a file with extension .89u that my TI-Graph Link software didn't support.
So, after I had installed the graph link software (v0.23), things worked fine. I upgraded the calc and it loaded surprisingly faster than when I experimented with version 2.01 of the AMS.
Now's where it gets fun.
My calculator was one of the first TI-89's produced, so naturally I have hardware version 1.00. I typed getConfg() at the home screen (My first command, yipee) and I noticed that TI has still not fixed the problem with the free archive RAM. Go to Zephyr Productions for more info about that one. I don't think this is fixable on calcs with HW v1.00, but TI hasn't said otherwise.
Running an ASM program caused an address error - as expected - and I had to pull out the lithium battery. This is a Bad Thing(TM). I'm guessing that the grayscale problems still exist as well.
Now for the intended features. I went to CATALOG and noticed the help menu. Expecting a short blurb a'la the TI-89 manual under each function, TI decided to instead repeat the exact same thing that shows up in the status bar when you move to select a function.
The user-defined functions in CATALOG are very nice. I like those. That's one of the better features I saw.
The serial number for the calculator is displayed in a much larger font (above). I thought that warranted a mention... but I don't see the reason why they did it, aside from clarity.
Some stuff in VAR-LINK that I thought interesting were the collapsible menus, the flash application management, and the contents of the folders you could get by pressing F6. Aside from that, no big deal to be made there.
Whether or not there's a limit on assembly programs remains a mystery to me. Anyone who would like to perform tests (with screenshots, please *g*) please email me as soon as possible.
Finally, there's language localization programs released by TI, supporting French, Italian, Spanish, German and Portugese. For more info, click here. Once again, click here to download AMS v2.03 for the 89.

and now, a haiku:

brand new AMS

when can we expect TI's sdk so we can get progs that won't need OS's?

what will this do about grayscale/asm compatibility with 1.00, etc.? does any1 know?

Since the OS has been fairly much rewritten, there is no compatibility--you'll need to rewrite all your programs to work with the new OS. With any luck, though, there will be a fair amount of simple header changes.

We won't know for sure until TI releases its SDK, which should be soon. As for all your favorite ASM programs, they'll break under AMS 2.03, so you can choose to have a faster, slightly enhanced OS with nice reset recovery, or you can have your games.

skip faster,
skip enhanced,
go get Archive Utility v3.00,
It's great, and it works! :)
Then, WAIT... I'm not getting 2.0x until games and greyscale work, which may be awhile, but who really needs any of those other "enhancements" right now?
I use my calc for math (PreCalc G) everyday, haven't need anything but what it's already got on it.....

I just read some items about the new AMS. It states that some calculators can only use 384k of the 702k user archive. I'm guessing that it means hardware 1.00. What would this mean for us v1.00'ers?

If you have read around, there's more to it than that. In addition to this ROM limitation, the grayscale routines are totally different. I don't think just because of a hardware change, everyone is going to go out and buy the new HW2. As for the HW1, I think we should stick to what we have. We should continue programming for the HW1 and the v1.0. I mean, look how far we have gotten with all the Asm games out there. Anyways the earlier Rom versions have the advantage of >8k programs, as I am sure you have read about the 8k limitation on the v2.0x

You can use the TI-Graph Link and the Flash installer to send an older ROM/AMS version back to your calc.

What's the easiest way to "downgrade" the 89 rom back to version 1.05 or 1.00, other than finding someone with an un-upgraded calculator.

Use the TI-Graph Link cable and use your computer to do it. You would need an older copy of the ROM/Flash software, but you can e-mail TI for that.

if somebody knows the date then can you please tell me when can i expect ti-89 with ams version 2.03 to be on sale at market? the reason why i asked is, i don't have the graphlink cable to upgrade so i will wait and exchange my old ti-89 with new one when it comes out.

why don't you just find someone who does have a graphlink? you can get the rom calc-to-calc

that's the main problem. i don't know anyone who has graphlink cable.

I hate the new AMS 2.03 release, I believe it is garbage and TI should be embarrassed to have created such trash. The problem I have is that I can't find the old base product codes such as 1.05 or 1.00. Does anyone know a website where I can get these codes and downgrade my calculator into something that isn't junk?

Thanks for the offer but a kind soul has already emailed me the old AMS version 1.05, I believe that version 1.05 will suit me fine until the TI community finds a way to play most of the assembly games on the AMS v2.03. I think the TI community is very nice and I enjoy reading the comments. Each response offers a glimpse into the authors personality.

Even with downgrading back to 1.05, will ASM games work on HW2?

That's dumb, at least your old one can run games, what's the use of autosaving archive mem and more space, the only thing that's good for is preventing games from gettin crashed (since little else CAN crash the calculator) and storing more games.

Without games, both features are stupid and useless!!!

Few people I know can fill up 702 kb of space with basic mathematics programs (although that BASIC version of zelda is gonna be hot:P Anybody try that on their calcs w/v2.03 yet?:P)

Hopefully the new calcs can be downgraded to v1.05

What's even dumber is that he can't get games ANYWAY, since he doesn't have a graphlink and doesn't know anyone who does. He's not going to be able to do anything with his calculator whether he has 2.03 or not.

Why downgrade to 1.05? 1.05 is worthless -- most of the games need to be patched first. Go directly back to 1.00.

He was refering to the newer calculators, AKA the HW2 calcs. They can't be downgraded past 1.05.

As anyone knows who has already gotten AMS 2.03, no ASM games work (as expected). How long do you think it will take before there will be some patched games for this? I think everyone should ditch all the old AMS versions and everyone should upgrade to AMS 2.03 and ASM developers should start programming based on AMS 2.03.

In the 89 Assembly Shells archive, there is a shell called Lexos. I could run some assembly programs under it, but other programs did crash.

C Reversi also works, because it is smaller than 8 K and does not use shells.

I looked at the C Reversi source, and as far as I remember, there were ROM calls there. That probably means that TIOS is not rewritten (I dont think this is even possible, since it is not all in the flash memory and cant be rewritten). So, if ROM entry points are still there, it makes converting (patching) games even easier. These French guys already seem to find a way around new problems. Aren't they damn smart? So just don't panic ppl, lets just wait a little bit.

Unfortunately for you and many other calc users up there, TI has made it pretty hard on us programmers since 8k on the 89 is VERY little memory (The same program that does the same thing on an 89 and 86 would be larger than the 86 program since the 89 files simply take up more room)

Until we find out some way around that blockage (which I believe the kernel made on some ti-france site may have done so, yet only works with tetris and phoenix so far) we will not be able to program any decent games for it, not even if we all upgrade to ams v2.03 Upgrading will not solve our problems, designing for ams v2.03 isn't possible as of yet
