It is so much easier to have the page to explore the archives than FTP. I just like the GUI better.

With this in mind, maybe someone could make an ASM prgm that will enable the user to actually interact with the PC like you said. If this is a possibility, I'm gonna do it. Wanna Help? Anyone?

There should be no reason for that. Once the transfer is started, both send the raw binary data.

That would be stupid. Do you have any idea how much battery power that would drain on your calulator?

Re: Re: When the archives are functioning, which method of access do you prefer?
SebGroessl

Yeah, you're right, I also liked to download the programs via http, but if possible, it would be cool if the guys at ticalc.org would make it possible to decide faster, which program is worth the download and which is simply trash!
I know its possible to get the information by clicking on the extra info, but after all, it's too fussily. If you look at calc.org for example, they have a completely different system in their archive. There you can quickly decide, what you want and what you dont want...
So why don't you take this chance to get a new concept into your archive along with that downtime?
Something like rating or so would be the first step. Like this you can also find out what programs the community like and what programs are trash.
Thanks in advance

Sebastian

Yeah, but have you ever actually tried to use calc.org's way of doing things to find good games? It really sucks - the pages take ten hours to load with only like 20 games on each page thanks to crappy servers and page design. The color scheme is also terrible.

TIcalc definitly does it better - you get the title of the game and a short description written by the auther that loads pretty fast. If the author doesn't bother to give you a good description of his games, then how good can they really be in his eyes? Then you get to see more info on another screen that allows you to also download the file, possibly view screenshots, etc.

Also, redoing all the archives now would cause them to be down for at least three times as long as they need to be now.

TIcalc's current way is definitly the way to go.

Have any of y'all ever been to ti-philes before? It had a pretty easy way of sifting through programs. Especially in games; it had different game categories and allowed anyone to look for an RPG or a Nibbles style game as opposed to looking at a huge list of programs with very little division at all.

The problem with categorizing is this: it gets confusing. For example, have you every been to a music stor looking for that latest title and spent 20 minutes in the wrong category becuase the person who put it there either a)didn't know what they were doing or b)it just makes sense in other categories? It's very frustrating.
