Calculators vs. PDAs
Posted by Nick on 13 June 2002, 01:22 GMT

CNN has recently put out an article (discussion also on Slashdot) regarding the slow but definitely palpable convergence of graphing calculators and PDAs. Since TI has essentially cornered the graphing calculator market (others would be quick to debate that, but it's what I think), the article places major focus on their business strategy (FLASH on the 83+, Voyage 200, and so forth) and its relation to Palm's inclinations towards mathematical applications and suchandsuch. This is definitely worth mulling over and discussing. Go!

You tell me not to add my signature to posts then go around posting worthless "PARADE" items? Hypocrite.

that'a all

Well this is interesting, I posted the same thing sort of...without knowing ticalc.org had it up already.

(http:// tip.ti-programmers.com/ index.php#2002.06.12)

I think calculators will stay in the classroom despite graphing calculator software. They are easy to use and most teachers are trained to use them (83 series anyway) and the interface of calculators (buttons vs. touch screen) and their low price point put them (and will keep them) as the math tool of choice for students and educators for a long time (TI's held the market for a while already in math tools in the classroom).

I don't think this will expel calculators from the classroom, but it will open them to a few other possibilites for added functionality. PDAs are too prohibitively expensive for schools to standardize on them. My old high school, like many others, had bulk purchasing plans where they'd get hundreds of [insert model here] to distribute to students. That isn't feasible for any current model of PDA, as the lower-cost models sacrifice considerable functionality (and processing power, another important detail) to the point where it wouldn't be pragmatic.

I've thought about that actually. I don't think that the person who wrote VTI released the code, or did he?

They (Rusty Wagner) most definitely did release the source code. You can get it at the (web page) link above this post.

I was thinking about porting the TI-83 emulation portion to run on my 89. THat is, until I discovered that it is written in c++ and I only know C.
C is better than c++. That is why C is capitalized. Simpler is better. Live long and prosper.

Have you seen the source to the Linux kernel? The tar's compressed size is over 30 megabytes, and it contains more than 11,000 files. (This is the 2.5.21 kernel, though earlier versions are probably similar in size)

The size of the earliest version 0.01 was only 60 K, and the first useable version 1.0 was about 1 M.

Using book Linux Core Kernel Commentary I watched release 2.2 . There are 1,5 milions of lines while printed were about 40000 and detailed explained about 2000.
