Calculators vs. PDAs
Posted by Nick on 13 June 2002, 01:22 GMT

CNN has recently put out an article (discussion also on Slashdot) regarding the slow but definitely palpable convergence of graphing calculators and PDAs. Since TI has essentially cornered the graphing calculator market (others would be quick to debate that, but it's what I think), the article places major focus on their business strategy (FLASH on the 83+, Voyage 200, and so forth) and its relation to Palm's inclinations towards mathematical applications and suchandsuch. This is definitely worth mulling over and discussing. Go!

I've a friend who has an old Psion 3mx. I have managed to persuade him to get a TI because he can do so much more: free software, neater programming, smaller, longer battery life, comes with a link cable, cheaper, more software.
All he came back with were:
QWERTY keyboard (but TI have made one, haven't they?)
Bigger/Higher resolution screen.

TI hasn't made qwerty keyboards yet, but they are supposed to release them at some point. Also, I think it was Michael Vincent who worked with another person to develop the necessary hardware and drivers to attatch a normal qwerty keyboard to your calculator.

The "keyboard" on the 92/+ is, I think, equivalent to palm ones.

well, yeah, the 92/+ have keyboards, but I was refering to the other, deprived calcs....actually, if you can get used to it, there's the QWERTY app for the 83+, that lets you type on it like a normal QWERTY keyboard once you turn it sideways. Its kinda clumsy though, a normal keyboard would be nice.

Boy, it is! It's more fun to type:

`1234567890-=qwertyuiop[]\asdfghjkl;'zxc vbnm,./

And it's even more fun to type w00t!w00t!p00p!

Oh, and to the guy with the bad disease (cough and cold), I was referring to the more standard upright calcs, NOT the old 92+ &c.

The fact is that Palms simply aren't designed for math, unlike the TI graphing calculators. Besides, I'd like to see someone convince a teacher to allow him/her to use a PDA on a math test ...

Actually, about the only thing that's calculator-targetted on TI:s calcs is the keyboard - everything else is just a generic z80/68k machine...
This is of course only true for the graphing calcs. :)

it is stil a less popular platform for programming, has no simple task switching, etc., which makes cheating harder. PDAs are expensive and distracting
