Universal OS v1.10, Julien Muchembled Defeats HW2 Limit
Posted by Nick on 27 February 2000, 21:48 GMT

Imagine the euphoric shock I received when I got an ICQ from Francois Goldgewicht telling me that a new version of Universal OS had been released by Julien Muchembled.
Now multiply that by several googols and you have the ultimate pleasure overload that I experienced when I found out that a patch had been written by the same person to fix the 8 KB limit on assembly programs on Hardware v2.00 calculators running AMS v2.03.
That's right, folks. Now time for some documentation quoting:

If you have:
- a TI89 Hardware 2 and AMS 2.03: launch "ti89_203"
- a TI92 Plus Hardware 2 and AMS 2.03: launch "ti92p203"
The TI92 Plus version has not yet been tested. If people can confirm that it works, email me.
After that, the 8 KB limit should still be there. If you install DoorsOS II or Universal OS, though, things will be just hunky-dory.

Use this at your own risk. If you have any successes, email me. Good luck! :)

Update (Nick): Belated props to Ti.Fr for breaking this and posting the files. I've been busy with lots of real life stuff lately, so sorry for the late update, Francois :)

Hrmmm, dunno about you guys, but what's the point of getting this later version of UOS? I'm not too excited about this released because I have an HW2 AMS 1.05 TI-89, and many, many games work fine (Sokoban, Slippy, SMQ, Diamonds, Columns, Zelda89b, Phoenix, Star Wars Othello, and more) with grayscale as well. I understand that this newer version of UOS is good news for HW2 AMS 2.03 users, but what does it have in hand for AMS 1.05 users? Some time back I was about to upgrade to AMS 2.03 but heard from a lot of guys that AMS 2.03 doesn't make many significant changes (one change I know is that menu wrap-around).

Oh well, I might be missing out of a lot of things - who knows. Oh yeah, and on an off-note, why doesn't TICalc.org have some sort of forums similar to this in the community section or something so that the TI-89 (or 86, 85, etc.) can all discuss a large variety of topics without having to wait for a news article to be posted?

the 2.03 allows you to use 700 ko of archive mem, and the possibility to recover it after a crash

I totally agree... They should have a message board or something set up so that one can just post something for all to read

Let me know when I should exchange my HW1 TI-92 Plus for a HW2 TI-92 Plus. (preferably when the grayscale is cleaned up, for example performs at least as well as on the HW1. I'd like to see 10 or 12-level grayscale if possible, maybe even 16?

Or should I get an HP-49G?

(Right now it's a TI-92 cause my link broke in the middle of an OS reinstall)

would it be possible to use some sort of patch for
grayscale? What I mean is, is the LCD mem hardcoded in
so it can't be changed or is it just that the display
unit thing can only read from $4c00?

If anyone thinks it would be useful, I have a hw2 calc
that I would be willing to disassemble to find part
numbers for LCD related things if that would help.

The main problem with grayscale on HW2 is not
the problem with changing display address. What is the problem? Even if you change the display address (this is hard, but possible), the HW2 video controler will not refresh the display until all bytes in the LCD memory are rewritten!

What are the problems? Are there any texts or anything out yet on it? What about writing a new display driver for it or something? Where can I find more info on HW2?

to get to the windows directory, go first to the archives, then to file archives, acces the archives via the web, then choose Windows files.
