TI-84 Plus Now Available
Posted by Michael on 26 April 2004, 04:28 GMT

Breaking news just in: The TI-84 Plus is now available through most channels for purchasing. TI has also created a new website to promote the new 84 product line: 84silver.com.

It appears that the 84 Plus Silver Edition is not yet available (you can pre-order from several places though), only the 84 Plus for now. If you are looking for a place to buy one, check Froogle.

I agree. Why the heck don't they just use the manual? The one that COMES WITH the calculator...

I thought that when I saw "TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator For Dummies". I flipped through it to see differences with the manual. One stated difference was "We use notations like [2ND]+[MODE], which is much easier to understand than [2ND]+[QUIT], since people would have to look at the labels above to figure out which key to press." So idiotic...

Clock Functions?
dabud15 Account Info

This is a question that has been on my mind for the past couple of months, and I'm sure that many of our fellow BASIC programmers would love to have an answer to:

Are there any new functions regarding usage of the internal clock?

If so, then you could make racing programs and such; racing programs that DON'T entirely blow.

What kind of commands? Details welcome. Is there an online book (in *.pdf format preferebly) that would have it? I think if there were an online instruction manuel it would have it. I know they have them for the TI-83+.

okay, I found some in the PDF file from the link in the above web page (attached to this message). But what happens if you have a program on the 84+ SE and try to port it over to an 83+? I would imagine that it wouldn't let you and return an error of some sort.

It should return an ERR: VERSION, as the program would contain tokens that were not recognized by the receiving OS version.

Umm... This is the biggest mistake ever made by ti,
in the 5 years since the 83+ and the 3 since the 83+ silver edition all they have managed to do is put a clock and a usb port in it(oh and redisgn the case, big deal). What they are trying to sell as a new thing is just, for all intensive purposes, a 83+ silver. Ti should have done 3 things more:
1) put in a faster (than the 83+ silver) prosesor
2) increased the memory ( i mean come on, i can buy a 32 mb sd card for less than $30)
3) increased the screen resolution (this would make for a new wave of game programs that would have some awsome graphics)
The only good thing is the usb port, but even that isn't that nessisary
Oh and just a question: Who is on the calculator so much that you need to know the time? even i who play on my calculator all the time (mainly in english class) don't need that.
To me it is not worth buying unless u don't have a graphing calculator already. If your gunna put out a new calc don't just put the same one in a new case with a port and say its better.

I think the 84+ might replace the 83+....sometime in the near future. If you want all the extra capabilities, buy an 89. It's not that much more expensive.

I dont really think these new 84+/SE calcs are replacing anything excpet the regualer 83+ thats all. The 83+/SE is still fairly new>

But it's more expensive than the 83+. It's for the people that want to spend the extra money for the extra memory and Apps.

Not to mention that the 84+ SE has more pre-loaded Apps than the 83+ SE.

Actually, it is replacing the SE. TI said on one of their sites that the SE will no longer be produced, and is being replaced, while the 83+ will still be in production. wierd, huh?

Problems:

1) They would need a Peltier junction to cool it off if they overclocked it. 15 MHZ is about all it can do without heating up.
2) They tried that with the TI-86. The Z80 can only address a certain amount of memory, so it had to be paged, meaning calls were slower and negating any increased processor speed.
3) Increased screen resolution means that ASM programs don't work because their error handling code would throw an error and they can't address more screen space than they think is there-96x64.

Not to mention, too much faster = kills batteries too quickly.

And, even with the paging, a total of 4MB is the maximum amount (without increasing the page size, which wouldn't work).

Well, could they do that on an 89Ti or V200?

Re: Re: Re: Re: TI-84 Plus Now Available

As for 1) it's not the same processor. The 68K can do 20 MHZ without overheating, 2) is not exactly the same because the 68K can address a lot more memory, and 3) is one of the major reasons for incompatibility between 92+/V200 and 89 screens.

actually, it sounds to me like you are describing the ti-86 or 89. The point to the 83 series is to be an affordable, simple graphing calculator for high school students. They already have a more powerful calculator line.
