TI-84 Plus Now Available
Posted by Michael on 26 April 2004, 04:28 GMT

Breaking news just in: The TI-84 Plus is now available through most channels for purchasing. TI has also created a new website to promote the new 84 product line: 84silver.com.

It appears that the 84 Plus Silver Edition is not yet available (you can pre-order from several places though), only the 84 Plus for now. If you are looking for a place to buy one, check Froogle.

Are the apps, and ASM from Ti83+ compatible with it ?

I'm pretty sure everything is fully compatible with the 83+.

...by everything, I meant everything on the 84+, just in case that brought any confusion.

So, I could write an 83SE program and transfer it to an 84SE and it would work?

I believe so; they both are Z80 calculators, they both utilize TI-Basic, and they have been tested w/ ASM files, so they should be able to run the same programs.

AS far as I know, it's just backwards compatibility that's the problem.

I've checked and I think the screen resolution is different...

92 x 68

rather than

94 x 62

Like I commented above, it's really just 96 x 64. As far as we can tell. It's a typo.

This should be adaquate proof:

consider the screen in memory terms and compatability terms.

The 83+ has a 96x64 pixel display (not 94x62) because
96/8 = 12 bytes across
12*64 = 768 bytes (sounds familar, doesn't it)

the supposed resolution of the 84:
92/8 = 11.5 bytes (12 if last four bits are wasted)
11.5*68 = 782 bytes
12*68 = 816 bytes (if the last four bits are wasted)

Now, for 100% (yeah, right) compatibility, pictures would have to be compatible. 768<782, so there must be a typo. And even if it were true that the screen might be a little bigger, it wuold be a waste not to just add 4 more columns to use 816 bytes without wasting space in RAM or in slower code to shift every other row 4 bits left.

Also, there is a correct thing about the display: 8x16 characters.

This is on the 83+, but it is probably true of the 84 just as well.
If each character is 6 pixels across and there are 16 characters, that is 96 pixels across.
If each character is 8 pixels tall and there are 8 rows, that's 64 pixels tall. (96x64).

And if you still don't agree with me, consider this, pixel row 0 is the first row, so pixel row 63 is the 64th row (though in basic you are only allowed to go to row 62 or the 63rd row). The same applies for columns.

Picture files take up 767 bytes. Now, they don't store the bottom row of the screen, so that's minus 12 bytes, then it counts the VAT too, so that's plus some bytes (the 11 'extra' bytes).

Yes, my school just got a 84+SE and it comes loaded with a crapload of 83+ apps. And they all work. No news yet on 3rd party apps.

This just in:n Our TI-84 Plus user has now reported that ASM programs will run. (Actually, Phoenix is the only one tested so far; I'm not sure about the others)

Excellent! That means that 84+ users will have at least one good game to play on their new (and rather pointless) calculators while they wait for 84-specific games. One question: was Phoenix run using MirageOS, Ion, or something else?

Unfortunately, now I have some bad news. It seems that not all programs are so compatible. The user later mentioned having problems with 'Chess 1.0' and some other programs as well (but didn't stick around to give details).

MirageOS was the shell used, though I'm not quite sure if the Ion or Mirage version of Phoenix was run under it.

Here is the discussion which doesn't sound like the program was beating him, but it's hard to tell:

Apr 26 22:21:40 <EOA> dammit chess isnt working either
Apr 26 22:21:59 <PatrickD> what happens when you try to run the chess program?
Apr 26 22:22:04 <PatrickD> and which chess program is it?
Apr 26 22:22:12 <EOA> Chess 1.0
Apr 26 22:22:13 <EOA> Its slow
Apr 26 22:22:30 <PatrickD> EOA: so it does work, but just slowly?
Apr 26 22:22:46 <EOA> Kinda.. really buggy
Apr 26 22:23:36 <PatrickD> EOA, what kind of bugs?
Apr 26 22:24:11 <EOA> Buttons not working...
Apr 26 22:24:15 <EOA> files not coming up
Apr 26 22:24:17 <EOA> Bad bad

TI is really using on the edge technology: this calc not only has USB but it uses On-The-Go Supplement (Point-to-Point Connectivity for USB).

But, will transfers be really faster ?

How so? Personally, I wouldn't want to waste another USB port on my computer (for the link)... I only have a few.

If you don't want to waste a USB port, just buy a hub. I mean, my computer only has 2 ports O_o, and I have to hook up a CD burner, scanner, TI-Graph Link for my 83+, and one USB port for my soon-to-be-mine 89 Titanium.

You could just use the GraphLink cable with the 89Ti... :o

I have 2 ports and 4 devices. I used to have to swap between 3 of them on the front port (I left the printer plugged in on the back all the time). Now I got a hub. My printer, wireless mouse, and SilverLink are plugged into it through the back port, and I use my front port for my flash drive as needed.

whats convienient is that the calc itself has a usb port, so you dont need to stick to the small link plugs that are harder to find and serve a single purpose. Furthermore, there are even usb periphereals that could be incorporated.

You can only use other USB peripherals if the calculator includes a USB Host Controller, and I don't see any reason why TI would stick one in. (At least, I think you need a UHC...)

granted im not too familiar with this, but if the usb is just like a usb version of the link port, then shouldnt you be able to interface to periphereals the same way?
