Lotus Turbo Challenge v1.0 For 83
Posted by Nick on 14 September 1999, 01:16 GMT

Time for yet more program spotlights. Badja released an interesting racing game for the 83 called Lotus Turbo Challenge. This game is unique in many respects. It has multiple heights and it even features enemy cars. This is definitely worth a look-see for anyone using SOS.

Update (Nick): Sam Heald released a port of Lotus Turbo Challenge to the 82 (CrASH) today. The possibility of more ports to come looks promising.

Good program and probably the best racing type game for the 83
Good Job!

Man, I wish I had my 83 still. I remember there was this one racing game by Bill Nagel that I thought was so cool. I can't believe that the quality of games are found for these calculators. I mean I have a 92, but these are some high class games. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that more people have the 8x calculators.

Yep that is my belief!
I also have a 92 but with the plus mod.
I know what you mean!

What? What about SMQ (Super Mario Quest), Street Fighter AFC, Big Dyna B2, Fall Down, APuzzle, and the best Tetris on any Calc. I believe that the 92+, and the 89 are the best Calcs. And after AMS 2.00 comes out with its massive 890k its gonna be possible to have huge games on the calc. However I do agree that this program is cool, I downloaded it as soon as it was made available. I hope people continue to make great games for the 82, 83, 85, and 86 as they have a large user base.

If Lotus freezes when you install it, look at the bottom of your SOS screen. You have to download 2 SOS Libraries. Download them from ticalc.org. They are ZLIB and ZGFXL. You need boht to run Lotus. Lotus is the best game for the TI-83 yet.

I was wondering when/if you were going to post something on this game. I downloaded this when it came up the first day. It is such an awesome game. Just like Rad Racer. I am playing this ame all day!!! Let's get some more quality games going...!!! Thanks Badja!

Kinda reminds me of Mega Racers, whish we had something like that for the 89....

What're the chances of our seeing that? "wish we had something like that for the 89" about a program for the 83? I dunno about anyone else but I see a little irony in that.

Someone should make an Z80 emulator for the 89, then we could play those games. Then 89 users could look forward to games on all calculators.

For those who think that a 68000-10MHz-32bit will easily emulate Z80-4MHz-8bit, here is a warning:

Although I know next to nothing about the Z80, the 68000 is not as fast as 10MHz. The 68000 is a CISC processor and divides down the clock input by twelve. This means that any machine opcode (assembly) will be executed in 12, 24, 36 or more cycles.

As I said, I know nothing about the Z80. If it can execute opcodes in 1 to 4 cycles like RISC processors do, then the 89'ers and 92'ers can forget playing Z80 games (at least in real time).

Hehe, you misunderstand me. I said I wish there was something like Mega Racers for the 89. I would not want this game (Lotus Racing or whatever its called) on my 86 or 89. I will never want for the 83 game made for the 89. Just by looking at the .gif of this game I know I dont want it on my 89 or on my 83. This should clear things up....

Until someone ports it, emulation would be good. I would never play a 83 game over an 89 port.

I will only be nice about this once. Z80 emulation is not technically feasable on the 6800. I really do not know how long you have had your calculator (assuming you have one), but I know that comments such as z80 emulation on the 6800 tend to bring all the newbies out of the woodwork. So please try no to say such things again.

If GB (4Mhz z80) emulation is _barely_ possible on a 33Mhz 486, what makes them think that 6Mhz z80 emulation is possible on a 10Mhz 68k? Ok... I know some of you aren't that great at math (and you have freaking calculators to do your work!), so I will show you:

4C 6C
___ ___

33C 10R

Compare the ratios... (the closer to 0, the better)

And you might also note that the ratio for the 8x/89 isn't even CISC/CISC... therefore making emulation require even more CPU time. Please reconsider your emulation request.

Ok, just convert the programs from z80 instruction to M68K on the computer, then send them to the 89/92+, so it would be just interpeted on the computer.

You, sir, are the lucky one. Since my niceness ran out in my last post, you get to see the non-nice side of me. I believe you have never written a program in asm for any platform other than 'Hello World'. You have no idea how hard it is to make an asm program for one calculator, but for you to even mention the thought that an idea like the one you have just mentioned is completely ridiculous and absurd. There is no better way to show off your llama-ness than to propose such an idea. Next time you post a comment about a subject that you know next to nothing about, think again. And even if you still want to post it, goto to #linux using your AOL account and ask them, they will steer you right.

I know he was not talking about dynamic recompilation, but if the game did not use self-modifying code, it might be possible. Most Z80 games HALT for a good 50-80% of the time they are running, making the emulation speed only have to be about 1-3Mhz.

Although, I can't see anyone doing this anytime soon...

I just have to say that I play this game all the time and it's great! And what you said about the .gif, yeah it does look bad, considerably bad. On my calc it has fluid scrolling and you can see other cars and trees moving pixel by pixel, not every twenty.

Great work badja! This is the best game on the 83 next to Little Dude 2 and Vertigo!
