Survey idea by me.

Sorry for the delay in getting this survey up, I had a few things going on the past few weeks and it slipped my mind. Please forgive me.

I also want to apologize for the "oftne" typo. It should be fixed shortly :)

Other than that, not very often.

Well now, he did end up buying a calc from TI, so in this case, at least, the illegal ROM brought a sale. TI should be happy about that. After all, illegal ROMs made it possible....

I really don't see what's "illegal" about a ROM image that you can download from TI's own web site. That's how I got the TI-92+ ROM image (I have the calculator, and I downloaded it because the rom-dump program didn't work, but that's beside the point).

Maybe I shouldnt say this since its "illeagal" but here is a hassal free place where you can get, I think 6 differennt ROM images

http: //www.geocities.com / washin99 /ti83 /rom.htm

If you cut and paste remember to take out the spaces before the "/"s

The page says "Netscape does not support the features utilized by this page. Please use Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher instead...I use IE 6.0 SP1" at the top.

Sad. Just sad. (somewhat funny too)

Well, I didn't stick around long enough to find out what "features" weren't supported. Still, I must agree, a disclaimer such as that is rather sad. Microsoft is everywhere....(they're watching us right now....)

The only thing IE should be used for is Windows Updates. For everything else, get Firefox (and nobody gets hurt...except Microsoft!)

What "isn't supported" is a popup menu; it works fine in Safari pretending to be Win IE 6 (user agent spoofing).

I'm spoofing the UA now in Firefox, and the menu at the top shows, but the menus don't drop down. In looking at the JavaScript Console, I get an error and eight warnings on mouse over and an error and one warning on mouse out for any one menu item.

The baloney about "Netscape does not support the features..." is just a lame excuse for not writing correct JavaScript. :)

It is illegal if you don't already own the calculator. It is also illegal for anyone except TI to distribute ROM images.

I agree that it's illegal to redistribute ROM's because of copyright, but I don't believe it's illegal to have a ROM for a calculator you don't own (someone else may have redistributed it to you illegally, but *they're* the one infringing the copyright(s), not you; the same goes for music and all other copyrighted works).

Software often has a clause in its agreement that says you may not use it without having acquired it from a legitimate source, & I am sure that at least some ROMs also have the same in their agreements, but I cannot comment on any specific ROMs or programs.

Don't agree to their agreements. Problem solved. :)

Usually software really tries to prevent you from using it until you've agreed to the EULA, but that's just a technical and not a legal issue.

Well, it is (possibly) a legal issue. It is (although debated) considered that an EULA is a contract of sorts. If nothing else, the EULA is the only thing that gives you permission to use a file/program/whatever.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How often do you use a TI calculator emulator?
Chris Williams  Account Info

I disagree. You already have the right to use a program. You don't need additional permission. It's just like any other copyrighted work, be it a book or a movie. So, an EULA cannot legally be considered a contract, as it doesn't offer anything in return for your acceptance (and it doesn't allow for any negotiation). An EULA generally tries to take away rights, such as the right to reverse engineer.

Now, you may argue that you can't use the software because you have to install it, and installing involves copying. It is true that you must copy to use it, but US Copyright Law explicitly permits end-users of a copyrighted work to copy it if such copying is necessary to use it (such as copying a program into RAM in order to run it).

Just in case anyone thinks that this argument nullifies the GNU GPL, well, it doesn't. The GPL is a copyright license. It grants rights in addition to all the rights you normally have. You don't even have to agree to it just to use the software (as it ought to be), and in fact that is clearly written in the body of the license itself. (Term 5: "You are not required to accept this License, since you have not signed it.") It grants permission to redistribute the software with a few restrictions, all of which are designed to give all future users the same rights.

I don't think anyone will read this anyhow.

I presume fake so as not to be illegal. Unfortunately, the only non-TI ROM for TI calculators of which I know are for the 68K's, & they do not support very much of what TI's OS does (the math stuff, at least - I am not sure about other calls).

I know the 83+ has an OS out there that includes a ROM file. It is on this site also. It is not illegal though, since the ROM is of the OS replacment, which is perfectly legal

Sure, why not. The ROM image is actually not illegal: it's simply the .clc file that comes with the TI-Flash Debugger renamed to have a .rom extension. I don't know if you need to load an OS upgrade to use it or not. I can send you ROMs for TI-73, TI-83+ and TI-83+ SE
