I'd want many megabytes of RAM instead of flash ROM. I personaly don't like most of the flash system because the people that don't understand calculators just think "Ooooo, lots of memory to store pretty games in. I think I will put it all in archive and nothing in RAM." and eventually, their ROM gets destroyed from over usage. Plus, I think that people archive a lot of stuff anyway since they always exceed the capacity of the RAM and are forced to use the flash ROM. The TI-86 is an awsome calculator because it has plenty of RAM (although I wouldn't complain if there was more) and no flash technology. I think that is an awsome calculator. The only good thing I see in flash upgrades is the OS upgrade.

you like the os upgades. I hate them. Because of them every time they come out with a new os, you have to change all of the assembly programs. Then there are are thouse people without a link who cannot get games off their friends because they have different os. Not to mention the countless people i know who toatlly f'ed their calcs try to get an os upgrade off of a another calc. They would have had to buy a new calc if i wasnt there to take there calc home and re-install the os with the computer. OS uprades would be great if they actually made worth while changes. 2.08 is the first version that actually adds to the functionallity but it is not much. If they were to add some new math functions, make it faster(hp has 1/2 the processor but is faster what up with that) then it would be worth the upgrade but. Is it really necessicary to make everyone re-write there programs so that you can jump from the top of a menu to the bottom?

You can force the hardware to take the OS even from another calc... Hold DEL and put a battery in or something... (For the 83+)

Games are for gay high school kids who would rather waste time actually learn something new i'm junior in high school but am taking all college classes at the college and don't even have any games on my calc all i have are apps to help me learn on my se all of you game makers suck ti should have to re make its os if it has bugs and eople should have to realize that they and there little games arn't the only thing out outr there and that they need to stop whing to ti about the os updates they are a good thing because if you get all the bway dwon a list and need to get to the top you can't unlees you go all the way throught the list again that sucks just like people who would rather play games than learn somthing as for what new calcs need they need a color screen to see multiple graph plots mand stop it with the colored out side that makes it look like a game boy what ever happened to the good color black? or grer? these are all good colors for a calc and ti needs to know that also ti needs to make voyage 400 a reailty and not just a nerds dream or a least one clac witha color screen because we need color green is better than grey and ti needs to know also ti needs more ram to do simple things like solve XY+Z^2+Root(U)=Y
sin(Y)+U=Z+y^X
cos(XY)=sin(X+U)^X
Xroot(X)Y=sin(U+cos(X+U^root(Z)))+7.45
What is X?
What is Sin Y

Ahh, you beat me to that reply!

Games are certainly not the best thing one can do with the calculators. Playing games fails to unlock the full potential of the calculator. Of course, mathematical projects alone does not either. For people studying computer science, the calculators prove a valuable tool beyond pure math.

First of all, are you calling high school students gay or people who like game on the calc gay. No not HS students arnt gay, and calc games are fun, in or out of class. games are not for people who dont want to learn, it is for thouse who sit in class board as hell because HS is so so so so easy. At least in my class, those of us who played calc games allways seemed to get the highest test grades, humm... maby calc games make you learn better. Now a college student i find that calc games are still fun because it turns out that college classes are just as easy as HS. While it would be so great if the calc could do more math, ti doesnt seem to agree, if you want the most powerfull calc get an HP if you want a great calc that is easy(and fun) to use and then TI is number 1. I would love to know what apps you have. All of ti's free apps are pretty much useless. And if why would you pay $40 for calc programs! Any situation where you could justify paying $40 for a calc program you would be better off just useing a laptop.

Jesus Jones, dude. Calm down before you make an utter ass of yourself. There are better ways to assert your opinion than to insult people who make games you don't like. Such as saying, "people should use calculators for their true purpose: to aid them in solving mathematical queries." That would be plenty to state everything you said.

Also, if you think that just because you're in college, you won't be play any games, you will REALLY be missing out in college. After everyone finishes their homework in my dorm, at least 16 of us get together online and play Half-Life for a good two hours - almost every day. Playing games is a great way to relieve tensino. But, having said that, I guess you must think I'm gay.

Calm down! I know from personal experience that when you skip grade levels in any subject you lose out on valuable social enrichment. I easily qualify as a nerd and my life has a whole mess of technology integrated into it but I can also understand what the effects are of being one sided. I know I'm re-iterating many things stated above but just because we love playing games does not mean we don't know the original intention of a calculator. A lot of things that game programmers want changed in the OSs are not for games but for mathmatical and GUI efficiency.

For your information, people who own and program for TI calculators (or any platform) are usually exceptionally smart and hard working to begin with. Personally, writing game software and math software and other software for my calculators stimulates my mind, and helps it evaluate tough algrithms and procedures in the real world. Programming for a lot of people is enjoying because it is stimulating. Personally, I just write games and seldom play them because I enjoy writing them better than I enjoy using them. People who play games (at least at my school) do not do it to waste time. They do it when they are not in any class and are bored (i.e. on the bus, before school, at lunch, etc). So refrain from dissing programmers!

Also, I find it hard to believe that you are taking college classes, for your grammer and conventions and overall interest in posting something INTELLIGENT are extremely lacking.

If you want to be able to solve problems like that one mentioned, then solve it yourself on paper (if you are really taking college classes, you should be able to do this easily) or get a 68K calculator, which has software that is quite capable of performing that task.

Dude, you are a moron. I don't normally go out and call people that, but you can proudly be the first to get it (at least in a while). Why do you go on making fun of game programmers, and yet your name is "Programmer2000"? Do you realize with your stupidity, you got over 40 comments in reply, ALL talking about how inane your statement is?

You don't have a SINGLE period in your whole post (not counting the randomly placed question at the bottom to make you appear smart, in compensation for your 1st grade-level grammar), you have ONE capital letter (again, not counting the stupid question), and your post has the same incompetency level as:

And NO they would not have to buy a new calc if the upgrade fails. A computer to calc link is about $20 bucks.

I consider bug fixes to be worth while changes. Plenty of bugs have been fixed so far.

>>And NO they would not have to buy a new calc if the upgrade fails.

Actually, there are some cases in which they will. I can't explain how it happens, but I've seen it twice with an HW2 TI-89. Someone tried to upgrade from AMS 2.03 to 2.05, and the batteries died partway through. They tried to reinstall 2.05 with new batteries, but it never recognized any data input through the link port.

I upgraded my friends calculators OS from 1.12 to 1.15 and it didn't screw up any programs at all. Lucky I guess.

Programs tend to screw up after OS upgrades on 68K calculators, not z80 calculators (*whew*)

I just upgraded my 89's OS to 2.08 (from 2.079, teh previous version of 2.08 for the unitiniated) with TILP on Linux. TILP did it in about 10 minutes, with no problems, while in Windows it usually takes 45 minutes todo it once, has to be redone several times usually, and preculdes use of the computer in the meantime. Use TILP!

That has nothing to do with the OS on your comp BTW. Its just the bawd width. I upgrade mine in just over 5.

I can't get the USB cable to work with it. I even installed the drivers TiLip distributes. Luckily I know how to reinstate the old drivers. I get an error about mapping I/O stuff of the hardware.

And he might have meant with TI's program.

And if he has Windows 9x/Me, Linux most likely *IS* faster with USB (did he say USB? I forget) (at least Win9x)...

I've had my 89 for 4 years now and have had no problems with my flash rom. And it gets used rather intensively.

I've had mine for 5 years and usually have it stuffed to the gills. I have had to garbage collect soo often if I'm want to try out new games.

How do you garbage collect on TI-89's?

Or just archive, unarchive, archive, unarchive, archive, unarchive, archive, unarchive, archive, unarchive, archive, unarchive, archive, unarchive, etc. a lot of progs. Eventually the 89 will do it automatically.

As long as they use EEPROM (FLASH for the uninitiated), it *WILL* wear out. No avoiding it (unless you NEVER write to it).

I love the acronym EEPROM, its such an oxymoron. Anyway, TI should incorporate better versions of it like what is found in CF cards and such so it would last longer and you don't need to "garbage collect" it.

And then the calculator crashes and you lose everything :( Archiving prevents that, even thought it could wear out *cry*

TI should implement memory like the stuff in CF cards. Its non volatile and does not need to be need to be "flashed" to be re-writen on. I would say something like a mini HDD but thats not practical.

That's where you make a little thingy on your computer called a backup. Do it regularly and you won't care if you get your memory erased.

Only takes about 3 minutes for my 83+ with USB link on Win98SE... But Apps and groups and any duplicate names (like prgmSN00D and apvrSN00D) need done separately... Else only the first one in VAT is gotten....

Is that what they believe on the planet you come from? (j/k)

Actually, you can store all of your programs in FlashROM and make a copy of the program (not unarchive it) in RAM, execute it, and delete it when the program terminates. This is how I can manage to avoid wearing out my FlashROM on my SE (I use Plasma 1.4, the only shell I am aware of for the TI-83+ that can do this aside from MirageOS, which does not work on SE's). Or the even better choice is to get a 68K calculator because they do not need to unarchive programs to run them; the OS automatically creates a copy in the RAM and deletes it afterward, even if there was a break. They don't even produce the annoying Garbage Collect messages!

About those "pretty games": Most of the programs on people's calcs are not necessarily games, but are math programs or utility programs that somehow extend the calculator's functionallity; they just store it in archive memory because the user may not need to use the program for long periods of time. Therefore, in order to free up a little RAM for other programs (especially BASIC programs they might be in the process of writing and testing), they archive the variable.

The only downside to creating a copy in RAM is that save games and high scores don't get kept, unless you unarchive manually, unless it stores in a separate variable that it archives/unarchives manually (like Sn00d (an AppVar)).

Actually, MirageOs works perfectly with SE. There is a person at my school that has MirageOs on his SE that he got from someone without a SE.

Really? It always crashes on mine after I run a BASIC program. Detached Solutions even says that MirageOS is incompatable in some areas to the TI-83+ SE.

To Detached Solutions:

Please fix MirageOS so that it can operate on TI-83+ SE's
