Notice of Scheduled Downtime
Posted by Henrik on 24 September 2003, 12:52 GMT

On 4 October 2003 through 5 October 2003, ticalc.org will be unavailable due to a major scheduled hardware and software upgrade. The downtime will be a few hours to a full day.

Services will be restored incrementally and mailing lists will be unaffected.

Further information about the upgrade will be available after it has been done for those interested.

The file archivers are real people too... they are burdened by homework and tests just as much as the rest of us. School time always slows stuff down a bit, but it's understandable.

I wonder if ticalc.org could possibly create an automated file uploading system...
Of course, this would have drawbacks - 1) the archivers would be out of a job, and 2) a lot more ... ahem ... useless programs would be uploaded (i.e. quadratic formula program #756), as more files could be loaded onto the server in a shorter amount of time.

They could make the process automatic, but that completely ignores the point of having site policies. Who would be there to inforce them. I still get masses of "fake memory clearing programs" that I have to reject.

Yeah we would be out of a "job." (i.e. we don't get paid) :-(

I would also like to put forth that I will not be allowing any more programs with any form of the word "quad" in them. There are curently a little under 500 quadratic programs on the site and I will only add them if they are in ASM. Only because those actually require some intelligence to make. Be leary about adding any pythag, guess, distance, or garbage collecting programs too, they will be carefully reviewed for what I call..."do we really need this."

Oh no, they're starting to count files in pending again !!!!! Wow, I guess it has been quite a while. Well, subtract 2 from that number, a couple were added today.

Hmm, I am trying to compare 5 days without new files with 4 months......OH YEAH

You obviously haven't been around that long. Check out the link above!!

Let's see, I know that that was going on since at least December, that would make it at least 9 months.

<Legond>
Going on, yes. But at that time (december) it was rumor and myth. There were hushed wispers, and unspoken worries. Everyone wanted everything to me alright, but deep down, they knew something was not right. We uploadd files and thought, "Oh, they will get to it soon enough..." but they never did.
And then, right before a we thought all was left to dispair, we got word. What was this, ther was something wrong. We were not crazy. In the 7 months hence, it has grown into something people say is not real, but I tell you this, it is. And it could happen to us again. So, don't waste your time, code now, don't wait. For when you want to upload your file, the wait might be 2000 files this time. Make haste.

Oh no! Oh no! I'll probably be first! I once wrote a program when I was a beginning assembly programmer that was *supposed* to replace PhSolver, but was so stupid that the only thing it could replace would be my head :).

And even funnier... they deleted my other comment about "the good old days" (unless I somehow didn't post it correctly, which I doubt). Eh... maybe that's why they were the good old days. ;-)

I still can't believe the time everybody decided to do the War and Peace thing, I was on vacation! :(

Are you talking about the time when there were ~1000 files pending upload? Oh yeah, I remember that....I was new to ticalc.org then and my first program took a few months to get uploaded.

Yeah. Aparently there have been times where there were more programs than that in pending. We didn't know about it because the file # indictor was not on the upload form page.
