FTP Service Turned Off
Posted by Magnus on 23 September 2003, 20:51 GMT

Due to repeated security issues, ftp service has been shut down. The archives are still fully accessible using http. In the belief that this is sufficient, ftp service will not be restored in order to avoid future problems.

Modification access to hosted sites is also down at the moment. We expect this to be fixed within a couple of weeks. Web access to hosted sites still works fine.

Update (Henrik): This article is now read only to stop the wild speculation and useless discussion. Move on people.

What are you talking about "pirates"? Pirating is only pirating if the software isn't free. If it's free, it's distribution. Besides, pirates don't hack servers. Hackers do.

That's probably just because you fail at everything you do.
Ha, I kid! I don't know, what did you try using to connect to it? I never had any problems. In fact, I was able to mirror their FTP server a couple times without error.

Oh no! What happened? What kind of security issues? What's going on?

Oh well, at least I've always used the HTTP way, so I'm not losing much, but still...

In this case, see URL linked in this post.

There have been many more plaguing the ftp server software that we are using, and most of the other options available for use.

Oh... but you already disabled FTP upload. Shouldn't that prevent this from happening?

Yes, but the same ftp server is used to serve up writeable areas as well, used by for example the hosted sites and the screenshot staff.

It's no surprise you had security problems. ProFTPD has always had security issues.

If you want a secure, download-only FTP daemon, use Dan Bernstein's publicfile. He wrote qmail and djbdns, each of which have a $500 reward for security holes. Neither have ever been claimed. qmail was released in 1996 and has never had a security hole.

If you need a full service FTP daemon, use vsftpd. It is used by Red Hat, Debian, FSF and many other large sites. The only technical security hole it has ever had is a signal re-entrancy issue.

We are fully aware of existing options and do not need any help. The decision to turn off FTP was taken a long time ago and then just seemed to be a fine opportunity to do so.

Dan Bernstein has several personality problems so I would not recommend hos software.

It is irrational not to use software simply because you dislike the author. Dan Bernstein writes excellent software. His personality has no bearing on that.

Can't you tell he said that to get you to be quiet? He's probably more than a little annoyed by all the users who are telling him what to do. They have made their decision. Get over it.

Um, why? The sites are still up, but they can't be edited for awhile. Of course, this doesn't make much of a difference since, AFAIK, none of the sites are updated much any more.

Well, look at "Linux Version". :-)
There was no update on the front page because we had no new Windows releases to announce (well, actually we should have announced 0.94 SP2 through SP4 in January/February, but that's not really the point), as we were working on new features in TIGCC 0.95. Now, TIGCC 0.95 Beta 1 is nearing release very much, so not being able to upload anything to tigcc.ticalc.org (not even a newsitem and/or a temporary redirect to somewhere else) will sure be an annoyance...
That's all I have to say, maybe Sebastian will elaborate on that subject. :-)

If you urgently need to update a file in accordance with such a release, I'm sure we can help you with that. Just not too much :-)
And that ftp *will* be back up later.
