ti-cas.org Shutting Down
Posted by Eric on 19 February 2002, 22:28 GMT

This is a bit of old news, but I think it's worth mentioning that ti-cas.org, headed by Olivier Miclo, is shutting down due to conflicts with the French division of Texas Instruments. Read the page for a brief history and Olivier's thoughts on the issue. Sorry to see it go...

That's too bad. It seems our community is in a downward spiral. Hope ticalc.org survives!

Jason Donley happened to it. He bought it out, took it offline, and made plans for an overhaul that would let it make some money for him. Then he disappeared off the face of the earth and let the domain name lapse.

ticalc.org will survive, not because of its news, but simply because of its archives. The fact that everyone uses ticalc to get files means that all authors will submit files there, even if it takes a while for them to get added, and so it will be easy for ticalc to maintain its file archive monopoly. This also allows them to be lazy about updating the site. Aside from the archives, nothing else new is ever added, or at least nothing much. Meanwhile calc.org is adding all kinds of new features. Only problem there is that they *don't* have the same size archive and the same popularity, and that they made some of the stuff at the top too many levels down, so that a lot won't get accessed.

Any new site needs to emphasize three things in order to become extremely popular
1) archives as comprehensive as ticalc's
2) consistant news
3) extensive user forums

Ticalc has #1 covered, so it has the huge userbase, and it sometimes has news. All the other sites only have #2 though or maybe half of #1 or half of #2. Hopefully a site will come together with these three sometime.

If you build it, they will come.

Ok, I went. For anyone who didn't bother to go, it was an essay about why a TI-83+ ebook creator should be made.

In my opinion, ideas for programs are not the limiting factor. The number of programmers are. Once someone comes along and makes an ebook creator and reader for the TI-83+ it will exist. Until then, people like you won't be able to do anything except learning how to program and writing it yourself, which would be a fun project and worthwhile since you seem to want an ebook reader so much. :-)

Maybe they would want to make the game as a programming exercise, to teach them how to program. :-) Remember, the beneficiaries aren't the people in the community, they are the programmers. They make a program because they want to, not because they are some kind of public servant, and people enjoying them is an added side effect.

Panic of 1837
nolekid  Account Info

this wasn't a depression but in 1837 there was a big panic because people went to "cash" in their dollar bills for gold and silver but the banks ran out. then the feds went to get the money they had put in the bank out but the banks had already spent it so no one had any money. they all blamed the new prez. (I forgot his name; the guy after jackson) but he had only been in office for a few months.

yeah this is off topic but you will all yell at me anyways. (I can see into the future: you will all look up at the ceiling and see the word "gullible" then go look it up.)

LOL! That reminds me of something funny

My friend said to my sister, "Hey, Gullible is written on the back door!" She goes, "Where, let me see!" Then, after noticing there was noting here, he started laughing his head off, and then my sister promptly looked up the word. About that time, I wrote Gullible somewhere... I can't remember, and said "Hey, Gullible is written there!" And she said, "No it's not!" But, then when she found out that it was written there, I got to laugh. It was funny, and stupid.

Perhaps you are thinking of Van Buren?

In the years before 1837, Andrew Jackson did away with the bank. He was worried that it would allow foreign influence and that the head of the bank had too much power. He preferred more local banks. Also, the guy who ran the bank was a jerk, and screwed with the nation's economy when the bank was getting shut down. I took AP American History last year, a bit of what I said is probably true.

TI-Calc, and the TI-89 have great programs, but how many more programs can you make anymore? Hmm ... this comment's going to be deleted. I don't think ticalc.org is going to appreciate very much. Besides, the number of COMPLETE chess games for the calculator could probably be counted on your fingers (or at least fingers and toes). Therefore, it can't have been made a million times. Unless of course you have a million fingers and toes. ;)

Interesting how, though you own a TI-89 and a TI-GRAPH Link, you DON'T like ticalc.org and TI-Graphing calculators. Plus, you have a ticalc.org account. Boy are you a hypocrite.

"Interesting how, though you own a TI-89 and a TI-GRAPH Link, you DON'T like ticalc.org and TI-Graphing calculators. Plus, you have a ticalc.org account. Boy are you a hypocrite"

-I have a TI-89, because I need it for Pre-Calc. I hate the freakin' thing, and I wish it burns.
-I got the GRAPH LINK when I bought the 89, 3 years ago. After that, I bought a Palm, and was much more happier than this 89 crap.
-Why do I have a TI-Calc.org account? Because not all of us like the 83, 83+, and 83SE. Some of us like to come to TI-Calc, only to flame people.
I'm a hypocrit? Look at you, you're so insecure about TI-Calc, that you feel the need to post a comment to help defend TI-Calc.
BTW: Last time I used the 89's Graph Link was about year ago when I used it to cheat on the SAT's.

Hmmm ... "Because not all of us like the 83, 83+, and 83SE." How interesting. I for one don't like the 83 series ... hey, depleateduranium, would you mind showing this guy that he's not the ONLY one that doesn't like the 83 series?
"I'm a hypocrit? Look at you, you're so insecure about TI-Calc, that you feel the need to post a comment to help defend TI-Calc." First, learn to spell correctly. And second, just because I don't like your attitude does NOT mean I feel insecure about ticalc.org. Besides, that doesn't mean you're not a hypocrite. And, third, Guideline 3 for posting News Replies states, "Don't insult or flame other people in your comments. Keep such sentiments to private email, or better yet, avoid them completely."

no there are some games that haven't been made yet.....

All I'm going to say is that I'm working on an essential game for the 89 right now....

(Whenever I have the freetime, that is)

Yes, some games are made just for practice, and others are slightly different, and have different additions and stuff to cutomize the game just the way you like it.

If it's flamebait, he could have been considerate enough to either use <flamebait></flamebait> or <bait type=flame></bait> tags. Anyway, if it's flamebait, let's ignore him!

Does the 89 always clear your archive AND ram when a program crashes? That really stinks.
