The Five Year Mission: It's Time to Party!
Posted by Henrik on 17 June 2001, 03:06 GMT

We embarked on our five year mission, to explore strange new subroutines, to boldly go where no program counter had gone before and to encounter strange new calculators.

On 21 June, five years ago, after several months of hard work, ticalc.org was unveiled to the public. A collaboration between some of the maintainers of the greatest TI sites back then. Since then several galant members of our team has joined and departed, and our site has seen several overhauls. We have served over two hundred million requests (200,000,000) and 3 terabytes (3,298,534,883,328 bytes).

To celebrate that our five year mission has succeeded and that we are about to embark upon a new one, we invite you all, that has helped us make this site what it is today, to join us for a party in the #ti IRC channel on 21 June 2001, at 15:00 (3:00 pm) GMT through 16:00 (4:00 pm) GMT. Use the Time Zone Converter to find out what time this is in your location. The time has been chosen to fit most of our community around the world.

A log will be posted here after the party. Take the chance and meet some of the ticalc.org staff that aren't regulars in #ti and discuss the past and the future.

Update (Henrik): Log is now available.

Wow! I've only been visiting the site for two years (since I got my 86). I remember the last layout (a pretty good one if I may add) and the switchover to the current one. It's been a blast visiting this site and seeing people interact over a single topic such as calculators. I'll be sure to be here at the 50 year anniversary ;-]

Your comment sounds like a product of the Department of Redundancy Department. Do you work there? Wait...that would mean you would have had to repetitively plug them, and unplug them, and plug them, ad nauseaum.

Bwahaha!

Fear the fact that all child IE windows live in the same process, and die at the same time.

Fear that Opera can disable the Javascript ability to create new windows!

Fear that mozilla is still to unstable to survive that, but Linux ignores it and moves on.

Fear the fact that Win2K looks at c:\con\con and laughs!

Fear the fact that just about any decent OS can handle up to 4GB strings!

Bwhahaha!

I may be incorrect about this, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think on that last one, it has more to do with file systems than OSes themselves. If this is not the case, however, what would *you* call a *decent* OS, since all OSes that I know about have this restriction somewhere (probably in fat16/32)?

A string, I assume, is defined as a set of bytes sequentially in memory. Might I remind you that your average consumer-grade PC has but 128-256Mb of memory, and Macs have less. Even an industrial-grade machine has only 1-2Gb of memory. Please note that that is total memorym, not that which is dedicated to one process. Once you find a use for 4Gb of sequential, interrelated data to be addressed by the OS at the same time, I'll write an OS for it myself :)

While I agree that the 4GB thing isn't important I must point out that I've seen mobo's on ebay that can hanld 8 GB.

Internet Explorer can disable javascript to. It's under Tools -> Security -> Custom Level -> Disable Active Scripting. Child windows of any program are most likely running in the same process because if they were to spawn a new process it would need to allocate more memory set aside and thus slow your system, it's just practical that way. The latest builds of Mozilla aren't unstable and are quite usable in both *NIX and Windows. Don't refer to the open source community as Linux, people take offense to that. The fact that Win2K ignores C:\con\con is a bugfix and not to be "feared". And the others responding to this comment already replied to the strings stuff :p
