Phoenix v5.0
Posted by Nick on 18 April 2000, 23:36 GMT

Phoenix v5.0Patrick Davidson has released version 5.0 of his now-classic game for 68K calcs, Phoenix. Some of the new features include random bugfixes, extensive internal documentation, many new comments in the code, slightly improved guided bullets from enemies and some optimizations in the code. Download this delectable new version for the 89, the 92 and the 92 Plus.

Update (Nick): Patrick has updated Phoenix v5.1 to fix a lot of the bugs he inadvertently created in the old version. Apologies for any problems this might have caused. The links are the same as above, so just keep on clicking those.

On an unrelated note, I'm looking for an IDE hard drive of at least 2 gigabytes in size that you wouldn't have any qualms with never seeing again. If you have said hard drive and you would like me to take it off your hands, please contact me. Thanks! *g*

Update II (Nick): Patrick has updated Phoenix (AGAIN!) to v5.2. This version keeps the user from buying more extra shields than they have, wraps the shields left to each side of the screen, and some other random bugfixes.

I have now released version 5.2 of Phoenix on my web page. It contains the following 5 changes: (1) the shield bar is scaled to fit the TI-89's screen, (2) the bosses now explode correctly and drop more money (that is, this stuff now works like it did in version 3.x), (3) the font size in the shop is fixed on the TI-89, (4) the top line display is now fixed on the TI-89, and (5) the shop now protects you from wasting money by trying to buy more than the maximum amount of shields.

Dang, Patrick Davidson! 3 releases within 24 hrs. thats awsome man! You sure know how to put it out for the calculator gaming community. I had a question... What exactly does the little extra bullet option in the shop do? And as for compiling it for the 89... I've copied all of the Pheonix files into one directory and all of the TIOS files into one directory and then I click and drag phoneix over to makeprgm.exe and I left it running over night, when I got up this smorning there were no "*.89x" outputfiles <sob> Makeprgm.exe was still flashing its little cursor. How long should it take to compile a file and how exactly am I supposed to do it properly. I feel pretty stupid right about now. I wanted to put a mod out with some graphical changes, and menu changes I made.

ps Once again thanks for the great game and the constant support!!!

ok first of all you should get tiggc compiler (ticalc.org) and install it. Then unzip the phoenix stuff in the program folder. After that edit the which.h file to specify the calculator u want to compile for. Then make a batch file called *.bat where the only code is : tigcc.exe phoenix.asm. The asm file will call all the needed routines and everything. Then u can modify the way u want it. But be sure to give the origional author credit. People like PAD deserve it.

For those who are interested, people are BETA testing my mod and it will be available soon (this weekend). A Phoenix 5.2 mod is also underway. That will be done soon too.

IF YOU WANT TO BETA TEST THEN EMAIL ME @ swtc89@hotmail.com

ok first install tigcc then unzip the pehonix into there. Type this in through dos prompt. tigcc.exe phoenix.asm. Remember to edit the which.h file before compiling it. It should be doen in 5 seconds. HHAHA. Remember to give the origional author some credit. People like PAD deserve it.

For poeple who are interested in my mod of the game a public release will be made soon. Possibly this weekend. And if you want to BETA test email me at swtc89@hotmail.com

THIS IS A TEST TO SEE THAT THE GRAPHICS LOOK ALRIGHT.

A Phoenix 5.2 mod is underway also.

Hey, I saw on your website that there is one cheat for this game. Would you be kind enough to tell us what it is rather than make us read the source code? It would be much appreciated.

no that would totally kill the purpose of the game cause w that cheat the whole fun is taken out of it. READ the code. ITS not that hard.

So is it commented in as "cheat code" or is the subroutine titled "cheat" or something easy like that or is it a lot harder?

I remember reading the sources to and old 3.x version of this; at that point in time, I had no knowledge of the cheat and didn't know assembly -- with this in mind let me say that it isn't *that* hard to find.

You made it too damn easy. Youngins these days. Getting everything for free. No work. I remember back in the old day when a gamer wanted cheats, they found those cheats themselves. Not like today. Nosireee.

I apologize profoundly for my laziness. But, I haven't even put Phoenix on my calculator yet. Now THAT's laziness. Or indifference, one of the two.

Wow, this is great... 5.2 out already... I havn't played it yet, but I'm sure it's great. All the fixes sound liek the things that were buging me, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this a lot... The only thing that would be noce is if there were some way to simply upgrade the program... were the high scores would not have to be reset with each new release... I know it's not likly, but it would be nice... (hey, it's such a great game, i figure i have to nit pick as much as i can... the more stuff added, the better the game gets...)

This new Phoenix 5.2 doesn't work on my TI-89, In fact it crashes my calc. But the older 3.9 version works fine. Is there some trick to making Phoenix 5.2 run?

Phoenix 5.2 works perfectly on my DoorsOS II 0.96 HW2 AMS 1.05 TI-89 calculator...

Is everybody else also seeing a line on the first row of the screen? It's not altering the game in anyway - it just looks different from versions <5.2.

I've found a few things...

5.2 crashes my calc as well... it happened when I played it on easy to test it out right quick. I beat it once and kept playing for fun. I already had ship III. When I got back to where i get to pick a new ship, it crashed. Not even the anti-crash in DoorII would work, i had to reset (by taking out the battery, too!).

Also, what's that black line doing at the top of the screen? It doesn't bother me, i was just wondering.

Oh, but thanx for making the enemys give off money like they used to, I love the new version!

well, in the readme he DID say teos gave best results; besides teos gives you archived library support, is open source, and is compatible with most doors programs. I haven't turned back since I installed teos.

if you want to change it so that your ship can't go into the damage bar for the 89 go into the player.asm file and change the max_y variable from 121 to 119!!

i recompiled it with this change with the doorsos environment and it works fien for me.
