Phoenix v5.0
Posted by Nick on 18 April 2000, 23:36 GMT

Phoenix v5.0Patrick Davidson has released version 5.0 of his now-classic game for 68K calcs, Phoenix. Some of the new features include random bugfixes, extensive internal documentation, many new comments in the code, slightly improved guided bullets from enemies and some optimizations in the code. Download this delectable new version for the 89, the 92 and the 92 Plus.

Update (Nick): Patrick has updated Phoenix v5.1 to fix a lot of the bugs he inadvertently created in the old version. Apologies for any problems this might have caused. The links are the same as above, so just keep on clicking those.

On an unrelated note, I'm looking for an IDE hard drive of at least 2 gigabytes in size that you wouldn't have any qualms with never seeing again. If you have said hard drive and you would like me to take it off your hands, please contact me. Thanks! *g*

Update II (Nick): Patrick has updated Phoenix (AGAIN!) to v5.2. This version keeps the user from buying more extra shields than they have, wraps the shields left to each side of the screen, and some other random bugfixes.

What!? No comments? C'mon, people!

Pheonix is sweet. I don't know how much time I wasted in calculus playing it...

Does anyone besides me notice that black dots are left on the top row of the screen where the ships come down? It eventually forms a black line, plus your money doesn't appear when you're in the Shop. Does anyone else have these problems? I have TEOS 1.02 TI-89 HW1.

Yeah - I'm noticing the same things too (HW2 AMS 1.05) where I see solid dots on the first row and can't see my money while in the shop. This game's a classic but it's a shame how 5.0 isn't working correctly on my calculator.

What the hell! First comment!!

The game looks great but the top line looks distorted and I can't see the money on the shop screen. What a pity. Hope that it can be solved soon...

I just downloaded the game and tried it out on VTI.. and it seems to have more problems than improvements. There is more in-game documentation. and some new choices in the shop. but I get weird things on the game screen. There are a few pixels at the top that won't go away. I also have no indication of the amount of money I have in the shop.

First of all the comments take around 5 minutes to take effect. If you post a comment it usually will not appear for around 5 minutes. Second who cares who has the first comment. Whoever started "first comment
" should be ashamed of themselves.

While looking at how ticalc.org accomplishes its customizations, and learning CGI at the same time - I found out that there is a 5 minute crontab that goes off ummm well every five minutes. This reduces server load by having it open and edit the document only every five minutes rather than constantly opening it and slowing service in general. Overall a very good idea although I haven't the faintest how the delay is accomplished. Oh well, at least I'm learning CGI.

IMHO, that's a pretty poor way of doing it. It would be much better to rebuild the page when a user posts, not every five minutes. There's no guarantee that it will change every five minutes, so no need to rebuild it. You only need to rebuild it when a user posts something, which could be 30 seconds or 30 minutes apart. Their server can't be that slow.

A P200 MMX handling all of that traffic at once; downloads, page views, uploads, and other scripts running makes it very pratical for the crontab to be set at five mintues. I believe the page is only rebuilt when there are messages pending to be posted. Otherwise, the script would re-build ALL of the news items every 5 minutes, something I am sure it doesn't do. Tell me what you think.

The next time who ever goes so close to MENTION a first comment on this board will get their comment, along with all replies, mercilessly deleted.

I'm sick and tired of this crap. I want to come home and not see YOUR comment board flooded with pointless BS that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the topic, other than a "congratulations" or a "wow i like this HEY FIRST COMMENT!!!111"

NO.

If you want to post BS that gives you the false sense of acceptance, go to Slashdot or another TI site. Don't do it here.

I refuse to tolerate this any further.

This conversation ends now.

Hey Nick, I've got an old Conner 1.2? gig IDE HD. It's old but heck, if you want it, you can have it.

I believe I scrapped it from my 486...

is the Best! From every Asm programmer, hats of to Patrick Davidson! :)

Pat - On the hi-score table, you state that Netscape skiped major version numbers. Give them a break. =) After all, Microsoft had used their monopoly powers and created "unfair" competition. I personally use IE5 because I don't have a choice. Good Job anyway!
