Ion86
Posted by Nick on 2 February 2000, 03:13 GMT

Icarus Productions has given me a great present for my birthday--albeit unwittingly :). For all you TI-86 fans out there (such as myself), you'll be pleased to know that Clem Vasseur has released Ion86, a great new program that emulates TI-83 Ion programs on your 86. Matthew Shepcar helped out by writing the .COM file included that converts the Ion programs to a compatible .86s format, and also by providing the TI-83 emulation core from Rascall. Thanks a ton to Clem and Matt for providing a great new program for all the 86-philes.

Sounds cool... I want a TI-86!

Does it emulate 83 ion, or 83+ ion?

Re: Re: Ion86

probably 83 ion only, since the converter doesn't recognize 8xp files

It appears to only work for 83 files, but most games have an 83 version and an 83+ version.

This is a very cool program. I don't think external levels work correctly and some keys don't work in some games. However, I did get some games running and the ones that do, are great. Mars Patrol works and has grayscale. This is a worth while download for all TI-86 owners.

Mars patrol was also just released for the 86 so you don't need Ion86 to run it.

Ion86 runs cool games(Try LOTUS) but, yeah mars patrol came out on 86 yesterday, and it takes up more of the screen so it looks better i beat.

Also--I LOVE ION86 CRASH PROTECTION!! IF HAS IT!!!
I not sure but when it starts to crach when i run other games, it quits after a sec and
HIT ON AND IT QUITS!!!!!!GOOD FOR IF YOU THINK ITS LOCKING UP!

This really seems like a like V1.0 not V0.1!!!!!!!!

ICARUS ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, thats it, I'm officially selling my 83+ and getting an 86! Becouse of you "86er's" my calc has just become a pointless possesion! All it has going for it now is it's Flash Memory! And thats not that great. Since I can't program in asm (<wink>any 1 wanna teach me?</wink>) the Flash dosen't help. When will an emulator for the 86 come out for the 83+??? I didn't think so.

-Pac Mak

P.S. This is just a complaint, and i am perfectly happy for all you people that have an 86. But how would you feel if you had an 83+.?

And doh! They beat me to it. I was working on something very similar.

I'm perfectly happy owning an 83+, you seem to be implying that it is inferior. When considering Flash vs. Running 86 & 83 programs, I would go for the Flash. I would certaintly never sell my 83+ just for becuase another calcs shell can emulate the 83. However, you may feel different... If you want to run more games and don't need to keep that many (all) on the calculator at once then you may prefer the 86.

All i gots is a TI-86, but well to me, that much memory would be a waste(I AM NOT SAYING IT WOULDNT IMPROVE THE TI-86--WAITING FOR TI-86+!!!).
But the fact that right now, i still have 15k and i can play um, right now 16 games, but if I took away my math stuff and some idiot programs i dont even know y r on there, and one of my two shells, I could prob fit all the games that r worth playing with 5K left over.
AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME JOB CLEM!!! CLEM AND SCABBY(shepcar) YALL ROCK!!!!!!

There will be no emulator for the TI-83+ because there are a different amount of pixels on the 856 screen versus an 83+'s

Well considering both the TI-82 and TI-83 have been emulated on a TI-86 (just look at the damn article :P) and neither the 82 nor the 83 has the same number of pixels as a TI-86, I'd say that's not much of an issue.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Ion86

actually, yes, the 82 and 83 DO have the same amount of pixels, the same way the 85 and the 86 have the same amount of pixels. This is why an 85/85 emulator wouldn't work on an 83+; the screen wouldn't fit

Sorry, it wasn't clear from how he worded his post ("emulator for the TI-83+") that he meant an emulator ON a TI-83+ as opposed to a different calc emulating the TI-83+ (for is a rather ambiguous word in this circumstance). Yeah it would definitely be ugly as hell to emulate a larger-screen calc, but since there's so little ram it would never happen anyway.

Actually, it is an issue. The 82, 83, 83+, and 85 all have less pixels than the 86. Therefore it could run programs made for them, just not taking up the entire screen. The 83, on the other hand, has less pixels than the 86. So you couldn't fit all of the 86's screen on an 83.

Sorry, my mistake. The 85 has a screen equal to the 86, which still works when emulating.

It's not that I don't like the 83+, as a matter of fact, I don't know what i'd do with out it! But the 86 seem's to have sevral thing's that the 83+ dose not.

1. Mario!!!!
2. lots of COMPLETE asm tutorials (not that the one out didn't help)
3. More games with bigger memory, not just limited to 8K
4. Emulation for three other calcs
5. It's owned by the qute girl that sits next to me in math, and it wouldn't hurt to offer a few games :)

But there's no way i'd ever sell the 83+!!! I just think that an 86 would be a nice thing to have around.

Just wait for BugOS v 0.1.9 :) It should have ti-83 emulation and modules. Check out our page for more details

Now I can play TI-83 games on my TI-86. I myself am planning to use my TI-86 again. I'm simply pissed off at the software situation on the TI-89. The TI-86 has a solid software base which works. On the TI-89 everything needs DoorsOS II and that is buggy. I wish it were like on the TI-86.

Re: Back to the 86

I agree; my 86 is MUCH more stable to use than my 89, because of the way the programs work (no libraries, no need for specific shells/kernels to run assembly programs, lot of memory, should I go on? :P).

If the 89 were like this, programs would be a tad larger, but your calc wouldn't crash when you did 3 root 2 :P

When I got my TI-83, it crashed on average 2 times per year. When I got my TI-86, it crashed about 2-3 times a week.. I thought this was bad.. Now my TI-89.. it crashes on average about 3 times a day. Whew. And all those stupid libraries and stuff.. I like just typing asm(program on the 86. Wish the 89 was that way!
