Ion v1.2
Posted by Nick on 20 December 1999, 03:30 GMT

Joe Wingbermuehle has release version 1.2 of his wonderful shell, Ion, for the 83 and 83 Plus. Some bugfixes are included, and according to Joe, this version should be as stable as can be. Ion v1.2 will not work with prior versions, so you should reset your calculator before installing this.

Does it contain a bugfix about 83plus grouping?

What do they mean by it will not work with previous versions? Does this mean program versions?

Previous versions of Ion, i.e. v1.0 or 1.1. You have to reload everything onto your calculator again.

Hmm... Ion has crashed my 83p several times...But since most of the 40 games on my calc are archived, it didn't really matter. But those games with external levels, can't have the external levels archived with Ion...I hope this version of ion doesn't crash as much.

hmmm I think that ppl should slow down on programming for the Ti-83 and what not and make some really cool games for the ti-89.... and yes i do have a ti-83 but there is enough games for that and not enough for the 89

Well, you have to remember that far more people have 83s than have 89s. The 83 is a recommended calculator by many teachers, and is far cheaper than the 89. The more programmers there are for one calc, the more stuff is released for it...

Remember, most programmers generally only program for calculators that they own. If all you had was a TI-83, then it would be absurd to program TI-89 games just because the 89 doesn't have as many games. So the 89 owners will program for the 89 and the 83 owners will program for the 83. Asking for anything else really doesn't make any sense.

See, the 83 owners are thinking: "uhh, why would I program a game on a calc I don't even have?"

And the 89 owners are thinking: "uhh, all I program are 89 games, why are you complaining?"

So I can't think of one instance when "ppl should slow down on programming for the Ti-83 and what not and make some really cool games for the ti-89"

Unless of course, you are speaking to the people that own both the 83 *and* the 89...

Thus concludes today's rant.

I dont know... but there are way too many programs for all calculators above 83 and 83+... I think more focus should be on this calculator now since all of the other ones have enough!

Atleast TICALC isn't like Calc.org, where all they post is 89, and 92 games...Here's a hint...if you want games for the 89, try going there. That is all that site hosts. They never update anything but 89 or 92 menus and never post any new games for any other calculators.

I sure don't hope all 83-games have to be rewritten for better usage of Ion1.2 and then becoming a featured program! Not for just a port to another shell.

Now I see Uncle Worm 1.1 - hardly improved - with that neat green icon besides it... again! C'MON! It's the same game!

Games do not have to be rewritten at all for Ion 1.2. What Joe was talking about is that you shouldn't install Ion 1.2 over Ion 1.0 or 1.1. You should reset your calculator first. There is absolutely no change in program format or anything thing like that.
