ticalc.org Hiring Again
Posted by Michael on 5 September 2008, 20:47 GMT

We need new staff members to handle our file archiving. You could be one of the people we're looking for.

The main thing required here is time. We get many files submitted every day, and it is important that they be processed as quickly as possible.

Experience with multiple calculators is a big advantage; we try not to put a preference on any calculator model or platform. Owning a lot of calculators is not required, but having some general experience is a plus.

We're looking for a long term commitment, as well as a high availability. You all know what our users think when there are weeks without updates. If you can work 8 hours a day now, but expect not to be able to keep that up for more than a couple of months, this is not what we want. Expect it to be quite time-consuming, but certainly rewarding. Once you're familiar with our system, file archiving usually takes an average of 5 minutes per file. We get about 30 to 80 files submitted per week, depending on the season.

Finally, if you can increase the staff's demographical diversity, that's a plus, but not a requirement. We encourage people, both male and female, from all countries to apply.

If you're interested, contact us at newstaff@ticalc.org. Please include the following information:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Preferred IM screen name and protocol (AIM, MSN, etc.)
  • Age
  • Current level of education (finished or unfinished)
  • Where you live (town/state/country)
  • Approximate amount of time you think you can contribute per week
  • Which calculators you have experience with or access to
  • A quick explanation of why we should pick you

Also, based our previous experience, it's worth mentioning that this is not a paid job.

Applications are due on Friday, September 19, 2008.

I'm sure you can cut the number of files in half by not accepting anything with the word "quadratic equation" in it. :D

I guess the person/people would work from their own home and/or with their own computer.
In which case, I imagine big memory capacity and fast modem/processor would be recommended. I also imagine that having the cable and software to transfer the files would also be recommended (which most people at this site would likely have).

It is an interesting offer, yet I have very little knowledge about the other TI calculators (currently own just 83+); and I would not be able to stay long.

I don't think file archiving would be very demanding on a system's hardware. The system probably is web-based, with the ticalc.org server doing most of the work (other than parsing/rendering HTML pages).

Clarification: Most of the *computational* work, that is. I'm not talking about the work the archiver person him/herself has to do.

The work is mainly server-based. Pretty much any computer will work.

You could use some calculator emulators and run them on a 486 with Windows 98 installed :-D

I'd apply, but I would only have 1-2 hours a week to spare. And it looks like you'll need at least 6 to keep up with the files...

Do you want someone to automate the process? It'd be a fun project :-D

Tim.

The emulators would need to be ones where a user could directly import the files from the hard drive; and work with multiple operating systems (at least the Windows kinds).

The file archiving process is nearly completely automated as it is. The reason we need people is to make sure that things are correctly filed, that there isn't profanity in descriptions, and so forth. This only takes a few minutes per file.

They don't actually review the code? I guess most people are sensible enough here anyway.

Sounds easier than taking screen shots :-P

not to mention for some reasons since I installed Nintendo USB Wi-fi connector on my PC my internet has been awfully slow, even after I uninstalled the connector. Pages load fast when it start loading at all, but to start loading at all everything takes around 10 seconds

Well the way the appartment is layed out I doubt my brother would have liked a wifi connection and I didn't wanted to deal with the whole wifi connection going down problem that a lot of people have it seems, especially in online games. On top of that over here wifi routers are more expensive than the Nintendo thing

What about a wired router?

You could get one (wired or wireless) dirt cheap used off eBay...

That's what I have but the Wii is Wi-fi only so you still need the USB thing for your computer. However things seem fine now, I just resetted my router and it's much faster (except Youtube)

Anyone else feeling a little Déjà vu here? :-)

I wonder if this is something I might want to tackle. Is there any way ticalc.org could divulge a few more details about what all file archiving involves? I have plenty of time and don't expect this to change any time soon, but the key is whether this will be something I won't get sick of doing after the first two weeks.

Oh yeah, and are file archivers allowed to upload files, too? ;-) Probably a silly question, but thought it was worth asking.

Yes. I don't think it would be a problem as an archiver is unlikely to upload a program against our rules (and as long as programs follow our rules, it doesn't matter who wrote them).
