ticalc.org Hiring Again
Posted by Michael on 5 September 2008, 20:47 GMT

We need new staff members to handle our file archiving. You could be one of the people we're looking for.

The main thing required here is time. We get many files submitted every day, and it is important that they be processed as quickly as possible.

Experience with multiple calculators is a big advantage; we try not to put a preference on any calculator model or platform. Owning a lot of calculators is not required, but having some general experience is a plus.

We're looking for a long term commitment, as well as a high availability. You all know what our users think when there are weeks without updates. If you can work 8 hours a day now, but expect not to be able to keep that up for more than a couple of months, this is not what we want. Expect it to be quite time-consuming, but certainly rewarding. Once you're familiar with our system, file archiving usually takes an average of 5 minutes per file. We get about 30 to 80 files submitted per week, depending on the season.

Finally, if you can increase the staff's demographical diversity, that's a plus, but not a requirement. We encourage people, both male and female, from all countries to apply.

If you're interested, contact us at newstaff@ticalc.org. Please include the following information:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Preferred IM screen name and protocol (AIM, MSN, etc.)
  • Age
  • Current level of education (finished or unfinished)
  • Where you live (town/state/country)
  • Approximate amount of time you think you can contribute per week
  • Which calculators you have experience with or access to
  • A quick explanation of why we should pick you

Also, based our previous experience, it's worth mentioning that this is not a paid job.

Applications are due on Friday, September 19, 2008.

Do we have an archiver?

It doesn't look like we have a file archiver. I haven't seen any new files in over a month! If I had the time, I'd love to give it a hand...

They haven't yet made a selection. They're still trying to finish the interviews (mine is pending), but progress is slow since they've been so busy with real life lately.

I see. Let's hope these interviews are done soon!

If it really takes this long to choose new staff members, why don't the old members take at least a little time and look over a few files? That way we at least have something new to look at while the selection is being made, and the site won't be temporarily dead for a month or more. (Also a news itom or two, even if nothing more than a status update, would be nice.)

TI-Nspire archives

Also, I'm wondering if there's going to be any archives for Nspire programmes. My friend and I are working on a web site for Nspire's to help unify the Nspire community; it should be up and running soon. Nspire archives would be a great help here, too.

I'll bring this suggestion to the attention of the rest of the staff. Thanks for the idea.

You guys seriously expect full time work for a position like this that offers no practical experience someone could take to a job? Seems to me you'd be much better off taking whatever time several individuals can donate to you than trying to get full-time work for free.

I know you guys run this site for free and many people appreciate that, but c'mon.

Processing the incoming files would probably typically take around 3-6 hours per week total. That's not exactly a full-time job, but it does require that one is able to spend a little time processing these files on at least a fairly consistent, reliable basis.

I bet that time can be easily be chopped in ½ by eliminating the following types of files-

>Crappy BASIC RPGS that are slow as molasses that nobody plays
>Numberguessing programs
>Snake games
>Lousy shells using CODEX
>Quadratic Solvers
>Crummy BASIC game simulations
>Anything that says "I know it's not that good, but it's my first program"

The file archiver should upload only files that TICalc.org doesn't really have. Things like nice ASM shells or games or decent drawing programs should be uploaded. If you filtered out all the useless programs in BASIC that no one really cares about, then there will be uploading files will be MUCH MUCH faster.
Most of the stuff uploaded is the useless BASIC stuff. You can save on server space.

At least some of that stuff is already not accepted anymore (or at least is not supposed to be accepted).

I think they need a archive clean up and get rid of some the junk out there.

I know how to do that; just one easy step-

Delete TI83 Plus BASIC Games.

There. Done.

Your obviously forgetting things like contra, doughnut quest and many others but I believe anything with the word first program or guessing game should be deleted.

Delete TI83Plus Basic Games?

The folder itself can be deleted, but if there are some good programs on the other hand that get deleted, people will have them and be able to upload them. Then, we will have only the good programs and the archive will have a fresh new start.
