Doom89 Released
Posted by Michael on 16 December 2007, 18:33 GMT

[Doom89]Aaron Miller has created a calculator clone of the much-beloved original DOS game Doom. Doom89, powered by the FAT engine, is available for the 89, 92+, and V200. The game attempts to as accurately as possible duplicate the original Doom experience on your calculator, and it does so very well with 32 levels and all of the abilities, weapons, and strafing that you would expect in Doom.

Update: A new version has been released with some improvements.

Even though the FAT engine doesn't support different level floors last time I checked this looks pretty awesome. Maybe it'll inspire me to get around to finishing my raycaster engine. :)

For everyone's information, the game was released on November 19th 2007 on TI-Freakware and uploaded at ticalc.org at the exact same date. Find the error.

So you're... not being constructive, relevant, and you *are* advertising, spamming sites, posting criticism of the site, and trolling. Point?

It seems the zip file with the source has been updated. Thanks archiver guy! (Seems like things have gotten back to normal at ticalc.org, that's good.)

Next time please keep the zip file name the same when releasing an updated version. You will see it then flags it as an update and makes the update process much easier for us.

Good job Aaron! It's too bad that you're gonna have to start all over again once I finish Icarus! Check my profile for planned features. It says stuff about Metroid 68k, but the actual 3d engine is called Icarus. Anyways, I don't have a TI 89, 92+, OR V200 to play Doom89, but I might just fork over the money just to play it ;)!

Solid, smooth running gameplay. I just got done playing "Oblivion" for the 89 and it was a sweet game, incorporating stuff from Duke Nukem 3D, Unreal, and Quake 2 all in one.
Now if only more DOS games can be ported to 68K calcs like Duke Nukem 3D and Redneck Rampage. Couldn't someone incorporate the "build" engine in place of the raycasting idea?

Oh, and HW3 Patch isn't necessary to run this, simply install PreOS... I ran Oblivion and Arena3D just fine without it.

Right, but if you want to run the game from the home screen, without any kind of kernel, then you need the Hw3Patch, trust me, during testing I crashed the emulator so many times because I forgot to do that.

PreOS takes up some space on your calc, but I do know there are some good games that only work within a kernel, so it's an alternative to the Hw3Patch as long as you run Doom89 through the kernel.

Don't need to run it through the kernal either... PreOS installs something that allows the FAT engine to write back properly without displaying the "1111 Emulator" message of death.
I run all my fat games throught home screen with the kernal installed.
No other launcher works with the FAT engine for what I know.

It's a tsr hook of some sort, but as I understand it it essentially does the same thing that the Hw3Patch does, it changes the way the processor receives the commands. Either way, with a kernel installed or with the Hw3Patch, the 89 Titanium will just not run it without help.

Either way, if it runs, it's all good. :)

You know what. I DID fork over the money ($70.00 on ebay) to buy a TI 89 Titanium to play Doom89 at school, plus I'll be able to get the user experience of my programs, plus it'll ROCK in my Algebra II class, plus etc...
