TI-89 Titanium Hardware Version 4 Released
Posted by Michael on 3 May 2006, 01:32 GMT

[HW4 About Screen]Olivier Armand reports that new TI-89 Titanium calculators have hardware version 4, now the latest hardware revision. There is a discussion (in French) about this. So far, it has been determined that HW4 has a higher CPU speed, perhaps 16 MHz. Kevin Kofler has already released a new version of HW3Patch which is compatible with HW4.

Olivier also recently released TI-Vibe which is a music player for 68k calculators, similar to Real Sound for the 83+ series.

Update: Romain Liévin and Kevin Kofler have released a new version 2.08 of TiEmu, which adds support for HW4. You can download TiEmu for Windows and UNIX.

I just got an HW3 calc at Wal-Mart... and how long is the return policy? Oh and is there anything new about the HW4 besides the fact that it is a lot faster?

As far as we know, there is nothing new with the HW4, except faster.

Don't use Wal-Mart. They're ruining the economy.

And if the extra speed is that important, you can always overclock your calculator. I wonder if a 33pF capacitor would set HW2/3's clock speed to something similar to HW4?

Though instructions on that site are for regular 89. Does anybody know if there are similar instructions for Titanium?

To finish everything up, does the new H4 run at the speed of 13 mhz, or 16 mhz?!

I ran CPUSpeed on my HW3/OS3.01 TI-89 Titanium, and it said the speed was 12.94 Mhz. Thats only a .36 Mhz difference between HW3, and RainbowMonkeys HW4.

I have looked but have never seen any for the titanium, and am to scared to try it on my titanium. It works for my regular HW2 89 though.

I emailed TI asking about the speed, and memory of the HW 4 ti-89. This is the email they sent me.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for contacting Texas Instruments. We appreciate your interest
in and support of Texas Instruments technology and products.

You inquired regarding new hardware for the TI-89 Titanium. There is not
new hardware for that model graphing calculator. I believe what you have
been hearing about is a new product which will be announced next month.
This product is already available in Germany. It has not yet been made
available in the States and will not be available here until this Fall.

Here is a link to our German page which you can easily translate if you
wish: <see link>

Perhaps the people who answer e-mails have not all been informed of everything that goes on in the company. If all they changed was the speed (or perhaps if they changed something they do not want known), they might not have informed everyone.

That's a support person not having been informed of what's going on in engineering. Sad, but frequent. The larger the company, the more likely this is to happen.

I don't think that it ever will because TI will be focusing on the TI-Nspire CAS
