Scorch v1.2 Beta
Posted by Michael on 14 April 2005, 04:59 GMT

[Scorch 68k]Martin Huber has released a beta of his "Scorched Earth" adaptation for the 89/92+/V200. Scorch 68k v1.2 currently features eight weapons, seven tanks, four types of armor, randomly generated landscapes, and lots of other fun goodies. In the future the game is expected to add a better AI and more weapons, among other things.

Ahh, a new program to try on my 89. And a new news article besides, always a good thing. I like games of this type, I can think this way, unlike in FPS where I tend to be killed rather easily.

Yea, after playing games like this for long enough though, it becomes a bit too easy to win. Hopefully you can set the AI to be really tough...

Actually, a game called "Castle" for the Apple II came before Gorillas.

Oh, man! I so wish I had a TI-89 or 92.... Scorched Earth is like one of my favorite games on my Windows 3.1 computer! Must go to store....

In regards to Chris’s statement.

"Oh, man! I so wish I had a TI-89 or 92.... Scorched Earth is like one of my favourite games on my Windows 3.1 computer! Must go to store...."

Wouldn’t it be easier if someone would just write a half-decent game (like this one) for us good old TI-84, TI-83 users…

Wouldn’t it be good?... :)

I think it would be possible, just with no grayscale maybe

Yeah, and the playing field would pretty much have to be smaller.

(The bitmaps for those tanks probably can't get much smaller than they already are, so just 'scaling things down' probably won't save too much real estate on the screen.)

Yeah, it would be kind of tough to make for us 83+/84+ users and we would probably be limited to about 5 players MAX.

...You could have more players if it scrolled left and right rather than throw everything on the screen at once...

Then again, you could try using the graphics from the 85 game in the link that I used to play... and you wouldn't have to cut out so much...

Too bad they don't have Scorched Earth on newer Windows. :(

This game is superb. I love these old school games, they kick ass.

Congratulations to the author!

I agree with you! My old DOS games still get played fairly often. I am an old school kind of gamer. I still play my shareware Duke Nukem 1 & 2 games quite a bit! w00t! Go Duke Nukem!

That's another game we 83+/84+ users need: A good Duke Nukem game. I was going to write one, but I never have much time to program and I can't do didly squat in ASM yet...

ah, them good old days ... those where we all played Apogee games :) Duke Nukem, Crystal Caves ... and Accolade's Winter Games .... Prince of Persia, Lemmings, Rick Dangerous ... *nostalgia*

I once started a Crystal Caves port to the 83+ ... and had finally gotten somewhere after stealing a tile routine from somewhere ... I could navigate my little "milo" around the (not so interesting) level, but he couldn'tdo much more than that ... until... a disk crash wiped EVERYTHING I had ... including motivation :( infact I had other things to worry about re-writing first, which included a few essays :(

Now at uni, time for hobby programming seems to lack even more :(

A shareware game called "Pocket Tanks" is an awesome Scorched Earth style game. It works with Windows XP. Here's a link http://www.blitwise.com/ptanks.html
