George Limpert Asks: Is it Time to Replace TI-BASIC?
Posted by Michael on 21 February 2005, 04:20 GMT

George Limpert has rescued the ticalc.org Articles section from its long drought with the publication of his commentary on the state of the TI-BASIC programming language. In a lengthy article, he discusses some of the limitations of BASIC and his proposed design choices that would fix current issues in a hypothetical replacement language.

Since it has been nearly six years since the last article discussion began, please remember to post your pithy insights on George's article, not this news item. If any member of the TI Community has a well-written article that they would like to submit, you can e-mail news@ticalc.org. There are no guarantees it will be accepted, of course (i.e. please don't send mindless drivel about how all teachers are evil for clearing calculator RAM).

I hope that BASIC is replaced. Spoiling the minds of everyone who tries it except for a few who manage to combine it with ASM and create amazing games...

2. MirageOS 1.3
3. Fooooooooooood :)

My teachers are evil for clearing my calculator ram.

Huh lol, I was lucky in that I only had one teacher who did that, and he didn't realized that I could cheat with the built in ti-89 system (most students had ti-83+). It's not hard to fool the teachers though. They never know much about the calcs. Get an app that fakes memory clearing.

You could always do a backup before a test.

Or you could just not cheat.

Have you considered that one may use the files in their calculator for something other than cheating and that they might like to keep those files?

My teacher lets me use programs as long as I wrote them myself. He also is passing out the vector calc. built in to the Science tools app for our vector calculator. He doesn't care if we use our calculators.

I agree. Self-authored programs demonstrate a knowledge of the subject far beyond the minimum required by a test.

My Algebra I teacher did that... 'course that was a while back now... We also had an Algebra I exit exam administered by someone else that refused to let me use my TI-85 on the test because of the polynomial root finder... they forced me to use an 82 which had a Quadratic Formula program on it within minutes of my receiving it...

My thoughts exactly. Just because I can cheat doesn't mean I will. I almost never do (my bad luck usually causes me to get caught). Who would have guessed that my teacher would get suspicious when I used my calculator on an English test. ;P

Of course not. The only thing students do is cheat. They don't take notes, or program, or play games, or anything else. Plus, all the evil electronics must be kept on a short leash because, in the words of one educator, "all these email things are gonna bring an end to us all."

GFA-Basic

I am the GFA-Basic's creator.
GFA-Basic is an interpreted langage and which proved reliable on Atari ST. GFA-Basic is very fast for example: A empty structure FOR with 10000 cycles is executed in 0.4 second.
Currently, there are more 50 functions... This langage is approximately 25x more fast that TI-Basic!!!

Ever heard of Omnicalc? If you've got a 83+SE, it will let you back up the RAM in Archive. Saved all my programs a million times.

Actually, it backs up RAM into an unused space in the rest of the RAM.

Because there is a bug. I'm just entering the URLs by hand to work around that bug.
