OurWorld Released
Posted by Michael on 4 June 2004, 03:57 GMT

[OurWorld on the 89]Kirk Meyer of Detached Solutions has released a new flash application for the 83+/89/92+/V200: OurWorld. OurWorld is a world atlas that is fully zoomable and has political boundaries defined by 30,000 data points. There are also labels of countries, capitals, major cities, and lakes. The 83+ version uses a flat projection while the 89 version and 92+/V200 version use an orthographic projection for a globe-like appearance.

It's also worth mentioning that this app won the grand prizes in the 2003 TI App Development Contest for both the Z80 and 68k divisions.

This looks pretty cool! BTW, if anyone lapped another person in the post race, I would be before the send person to do so...

Wasn't TI going to make this into a paying APP?

This is cool. Now if we were only allowed to use calculators on Geography tests... :)

wow, awesome app for... well im not sure what exactly it could be used for, unless you could convince national geographic to allow calculators in the geography bee...
This looks like a ton of work to program, and I commend Kirk for his effort.

I know it's just a screens shot, but the full version only shows the extra stuff of the USA too (eg.states).

I added the USA state outlines because I suspected that most users would be from the USA. In an effort to keep the size of the application somewhat reasonable, I didn't add any other political boundaries - and I certainly don't want to release a separate version for each country! The data points may not even be freely available for some countries.

You should make for Europe and Asia and such too, i think only 1/2 of the people here are from USA!!

Find the datasets for free and I will consider it. I suspect however that doing a whole continent worth of "states" would be very large. For example, I didn't do all of North America because the Mexican provinces added a significant amount of size.

Heh I meant data points in a computer-usable format, i.e. GIS data. I'm not about to vectorize the maps with that amount of precision by hand, but if you would like to, go ahead...

There's the CIA World Map, but AFAIK it is _way_ too detailed to be used as is in OurWorld. (There is no way to fit all that on a calculator.)

There was never a "deal" finalized - let's just say that TI can take a long time to respond to things sometimes, and finally it was determined that this program did not fit with their current math/science focus.

Whether you'll win the app contest I don't know, but as long as you put Flevoland in, I'll definitely download your app. :D
@Kirk, looks like your GIS-data is a bit out of date. In the Netherlands, you're missing an entire province (that's our equivalent of a USA state).

I didn't mean the border isn't drawn, I meant *Flevoland is not there*. (It's displayed as if it were sea.)
You see, we had this huge lake (or small sea, whatever you wanna call it) where we built a couple of dykes, threw the water out, and got ourself another province. (Yes, people are actually living on what used to be the bodem of a sea. We Dutch are a wacky lot, aren't we? ;) )

Dutch is a good way to be :P

(I'm about 1/2 Dutch myself :))

Isn't most of The Netherlands reclaimed land? (in other words, the sea's land taken by dikes :P)
If not most, then isn't a good percentage?

Re (8): OurWorld Released
Rob van Wijk  Account Info

Not most, but indeed a rather large part. I couldn't slap a percentage on it, but I can assure you the map would look very different if we hadn't taught the sea who's the boss. :D
If there wouldn't be any dikes, and the sea level raises by 5 lousy meters, about half the country is reclaimed by the sea (which happens to include the most densly populated areas)....

BTW, I'd like to congratulate Kirk on finding a new use for our beloved calcs (or should I say 'a new class where we can use them'?), good job!
