File Rating Toplist added
Posted by Magnus on 3 April 2004, 17:08 GMT

Now that we have collected a couple of ratings on the files in our archives (about 2500 of them), we have now added a toplist based on file rating. Rating will also be listed on the file information pages.

We are using a weighted average instead of a straight one. This is done so that a file that has received a lot of good ratings will get a higher average than one that has just received a few, and then the same for files with low ratings. For this reason, it is possible for a file to get a weighted average that is slightly above 10 or below 1.

So, once again, go rate files! Just select the rating you want to give the file on the file information page-

just out of curiosity, how often are the ratings going to be updated

Daily, along with the other toplists.

When you update them, is there any "discretion" as to whether a vote is valid or not? or are all votes accepted? Just curious as to whether you would be able to see if someone just went through and voted all 1's sequentially in a section or something...

I think they should discard the top and bottom, say, 5% of the votes to get rid of the bogus or "joke" votes (which I'm guessing are likely to be 1 or 10). If the file deserves a 1 or a 10, then it will receive enough '1' or '10' votes such that removing the highest and lowest votes wouldn't be a problem in this situation.

Of course, if there are an equal number of bogus 1's and 10's, this won't change the average one bit (though it still affects the weight because they still count as votes).

This is just one way to reduce statistical noise in the file rating system.

I was sort of hoping that I would know what people thought of my files that I have uploaded. If I knew what was popular, I would try to make more of it...although the most downloaded is my Tic-Tac-Toe 2 Player Link game.

TI-83 Plus BASIC Games:
Tic-Tac-Toe (2 player link)
QuickKey (2 player link)

TI-83 Plus Flash Application Variables (NoteFolio):
Noteflio Special Chars.

TI-83 Plus BASIC Misc. Programs:
Misc. Files

It shows up when four or more ratings have been registered for the file.

i guess that makes sense, but maybe you could show us the average anyways and just not count it for anything, because some programs may only ever get 3 ratings.

i just got another idea, show the average and the number of votes on the manage author info page so that the author can see the votes on the program before it gets 4 votes, and that way you dont need to worry about misleading people or anything, but the authors can still get an idea of what people think about their programs.

That's what I was thinking...the rating on the manage author information page would be really helpful. You could just add another column to the table that's already there. If you could do this, I would love you Magnus. More than I already do. Like, you might have to fight me off of you. Yeah, I'd love you that much. But really, that's a great idea, and, if I knew how, I wouldn't mind helping to get it done... ;)

I believe that the author of TI Report is planning some sort of update that might include ratings, look for that, although I am not entirely sure.

I am not sure how easily it would be to implement that onto the Manage Author Information list.

How is it possible to have an average that is greater than the highest number in the set? IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE!!!! I AM SO CONFUSED!!!!!

Same here. How did ZShell gat an average of 10.12, when the highest possible rating is 10? Maybe someone hacked it?? Anyway, ticalc.org should so something about it.

The toplist is weighted somehow. No word on what the weighting formula is or how much something is weighted, it just is...

Apparently, both of you didn't completely read the article. It says that because of the weighing given to the numbers of votes, it is possible to have ratings above 10.

I don't understand though. Why is it weighted? How is it weighted? Does it have to do with the number of downloads?

I think the way it works is, if everybody voted 20 times for ZShell as 10 and they voted 10 times for PreOS as a 10, then ZShell will have a higher rating than PreOS because MORE people voted 10 for it than they did for PreOS, even though their averages are the same.

My guess is that the algorithm is something like averageVotes + numVotes * factor, but I really don't know for sure.

As a generalisation, that's how it's done. The actual algorithm is a bit more complex than that, but that's the general idea.

Why don't show the normal average and the number of votes as well?

Because a program that gets, say 4 9's, shouldn't be rated higher than one that gets, say 20 votes that average 8.9, because the 20 votes are more clear that the WHOLE public agree it is a good program...the weighted average pushes it over the other one...

I totally agree with the idea of weighted average. I am just asking to display the underlying information (votes and normal average) as well.
