Joey Gannon Joins the Dark Side
Posted by Michael on 13 January 2004, 22:41 GMT

We are sorry to report that Joey Gannon, our hard-working file archiver, has been seen participating in the notorious RPN cult. This is the same group that is infamous for the Sliderule Massacres of '71. Oaths of secrecy prevent information from disseminating to the public, but the mystical letters RPN are rumored to stand for Really Poor Notation, though this is unconfirmed. Members have been known to do odd things in the name of Al-Gebra, their sacred way of math.

No one knows why he may have done this. One psychologist we interviewed stated, "There are many reasons why an individual would suddenly dissociate from previous beliefs." He was not of much help. Our other file archiver, Morgan, experienced no signs of mental distress, commenting: "What did Joey do!? WHAT??? He always seemed like such a good kid!"

ticalc.org readers in Maine have written to report seeing Joey dressed in black robes and performing a calculator sacrifice. His only comment was, "Oportet ministros manus lavare antequam latrinam relinquent. When I burn the calculator, my world becomes the calculator. I must go find a Voyage 200 now so that my long journey to enlightenment may begin."

Read the reaction: Fe2O3 is commonly known as rust: everything but the magnesium is quite common. It makes a good Chemistry class demo.

any ideas where i can get some fransium?
our chemestry teacher gave a demo with some other elements in fransiums family, but fransium would be the most reactive, he said we couldnt do it cause it would be to dangerous, this of course intrigued me to try it...

It's spelled Francium.

You aren't going to be able to easily find anything beyond sodium. Sodium will work well enough, just purchase a large quantity.

we did lithium, sodium, and potassium in chemistry, but the pieces were about as big as this o. So i suppose a lot of sodium would be interesting to try...

In our chemistry class, they showed a video of Lithium (bit of smoke), Sodium (not very interesting either), Potassium (that gave a minor explosion), Rubidium (now we're talking) and Cesium being dropped in water. For the Cesium, a robot opened its arm, releasing (what looked like) nothing, but there was a consideral explosion nevertheless. I'm not sure if I really want to know what water does to Francium.

You realize that that's a horrible way of demonstrating size, right? Unless we have a monitor that's the same size as yours, at the same resolution, that 'o' will be a different size than it was for you.

There's a reason people don't mix water and Francium. It's called radioactivity. It might blow up nicely, but you won't be having many kids afterwards...

Good point. But would the children be able to use graphing calculators?

Who knows? The children might have graphing capabilities in their DNA! They can instantly visualize any graph, and their fingers would be enhanced to draw perfect lines, parabolas, sine curves, etc. They might even be able to graph in standard form, instead of the inhibiting y= form!

First you have to have critical mass, or more if you really want an explosion, then if by some unhuman miracle you survive, you won't have kids.

Well... there is also the fact that francium is pretty much exclusivly derived from the decay of actinium and there exists, at any given moment, about an ounce of it evenly distributed through out the crust of the earth... that might make it hard to come by.

well, francium IS radioactive, so i doubt youd be able to isolate pure francium, unless of course you happen to be friends with a nobel prize winner in chemistry who has access to a large lab with lots of cool gadgets and stuff...

Quicktime won't play the movie. What is DivX? Do I absolutely need this DivX player or is there some kind of update I can download for QuickTime that will make my life easier?

You'll need the DivX codec to watch the movie. DivX is a very common, multi-platform codec, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to have it. I watch DivX movies in WMP, so I don't know if it'll work in QT.

Well, download the free Div-X player. (Or just update WMP with the Div-X codec. Yes it works on almost any version.)

I recommend using a combo of ffdshow and media player classic (ffdshow decodes DivX and XviD videos, among other mpeg4-based codecs)

I'm not going to post any links here (or permit any to be posted), because I don't want to be held responsible if you guys do something bad. Of course, if you want to come over to my house, I've still got almost a 1/2 pound left, and tons of magnesium ribbon. :-D

Didn't you see the "jk"? :-) Even though I don't have a mac, I already like them better than PCs because of the number of crashes of my win me and 95 machines, and because I hate microsoft in general. The only reason I keep on using/buying PCs is that I'm already started with them-all my programs, files, games, etc. are here.

I saw it. I took no offence. With where "jk" was I thought it was refering to "evil grin" since it was after the period and in between stuff. I have removed so much stress in my life by switching to a mac it is not even a tad bit funny. I have had only one crash and that is do to a user configuration error which has been corrected.

my chemistry teacher did a demonstration of thermite, and when he had a big puddle of liquid iron, he dropped a penny on it and the penny actually caught on fire and burnt up (it was one of those old all-copper pennies).
