Animated Screenshots
Posted by Kirk on 2 July 1999, 04:06 GMT

ticalc.org is proud to announce that it now has the capability to quickly and easily take animated screenshots of programs. Currently, two animated screenshots exist in our archives: Street Fighter II for the TI-89 and Tetris Attack for the TI-86. We will be able to add many more of these screenshots in the very near future, although they will most likely be restricted to the more "popular" programs. (NOTE: Clicking the above links will take you to the corresponding file info pages instead of downloading the file.)

Additionally, winners of the Program of the Month awards will have the addition reward of being able to display an animated screenshot of their program on their web page next to the standard POTM button. Previous winners should contact Kirk Meyer in order to obtain this benefit. Please attach the most recent version of your program when emailing.

i reall don't think tetris attack deserves a freaking animated gif. that game is so simple, it could be coded in 2 hours.

It received POTM awards in two separate categories. Simple or not, its an addicting game. But since it could be coded in two hours, how about _YOU_ making something better within a day? I'll check the file archives tomorrow to see what you've posted.

well, right now i'm making a cgb game, but as soon as i'm done i'll code some game that has nothing to do with 4 and then arbitrarily add tetris into the title.

p.s. You know you could code it in 2 or 3 hours too kirk. admit it.

Please think of the movie 'Waterworld' for a moment - a billion dollars and countless hours to make; and yet the Hollywood flop of the century.

My point - (I know I had one..:o)

Ah yes; even if a game takes a long time to code, it could be very unpopular. And even if tetris attack took only two hours to code (which I doubt :P), it is indeed an addicting, popular game. If TI-Calc wants to give animated gifs to popular games, this one should get it.

ticalc.org: would you consider possibly incorporating a special icon for animated screenshots? A file without screenshots has a white file icon next to it, a file with screenshots has a red file icon, so maybe a file containing animated screenshots could have something like a blue or green file icon, or maybe the icon could be that of a film reel. If you really wanted to be extravagant, you could even use an animated icon! Just an idea to consider...

Are you guys trying to claim that you started animated screenshots? I have seen animated screen shots along time ago. Just because you finally joined the bandwagon dosn't mean you created them. I hope that all TI sites will be able to use animated screenshots on their site and not be afraid that ticalc.org will get mad that they are copying their idea. As long as people make their own animated screenshots it is prefectly legal to use aniamted screenshots on any site.

Of course not. We are not saying that we invented animated GIFs. They're part of the GIF89a standard, from 1989. That's uh 10 years ago. No, we didn't invent them. We made a utility to take animated screenshots of TI calculator programs. It's really fast and easy, which means we can create a high volume of them. If other TI sites make animated screenshots, that's fine - they just won't have the quick and easy utility - unless they make one for themselves of course. Now if other TI sites actually post our screenshots on their site, well yeah then we might be mad.

That is what I tought thanks for clearing it up. What you could do is put the ticalc.org name somewhere in the animation maybe at the end before it loops back to be assured that nobody copies. Because if you have no proof it is just one author's word against another.

Each GIF contains a copyright notice comment, and also our gif's have a black & white border around them, and they are in greyscale. I think that it would be pretty obvious if we saw any taken by our utility on another site.
