SOS v2.0 Released
Posted by Kirk on 23 June 1999, 21:42 GMT

SOS v2.0 has been released for the TI-83 calculator. New features include module support (a.k.a. plugins), fixes with the APD and shutdown routines, and a few other minor changes and optimizations. The release of the shell shows that Joe Wingbermuehle has not forsaken the TI-83 community. As always, older versions of SOS are available in the TI-83 out-of-date shells directory.

NOTE: ticalc.org apologizes for the posting of an unnewsworthy article about the Z80 Assembly Coders, especially when an article such as this was available. Since there were no constructive comments about the article, it was removed. We also apologize that this article is quite a few days late after the program's release. This was due to a coordination problem between news and file archives. We promise that this will not happen again.

Unnewsworthy Article??

What does ticalc.org mean when they speak of an unnewsworthy article? That is unclear and unless clarified leads to flame wars. Also, when ticalc is threatening to revoke the message board priviliges, does this mean from certain users and IPs or from everyone? I think ticalc.org should try to improve the quality of news items so more intelligent discussion goes on and to ban the IPs of people who choose to use profanity or engage in flame wars. I have also seen some intelligent comments that have been removed recently in addition to flames and unnecessary posts. In my opinion, ticalc should also screen messages and not post any messages that do not use clean language.

I agree with your idea, however, I think that most of the news items are relevant and at least slightly newsworthy...besides, ticalc is kinda under pressure to crank out the news, so you're gonna get quantity with only moderate quality instead of high-quality news items that are few and far between (it's hard to dig up amazing, 100% important TI news on a daily basis). If you're wondering what I meant by "under pressure", there were a lot of posts a while back regarding the lack of news items...at that time, the few that did appear were pretty newsworthy, but people complained that there wasn't enough news, so ticalc picked up the pace but probably had to sacrifice the importance of the news.
And about the flame wars, it doesn't matter whether or not the item is newsworthy....its worthiness shall be debated anyway, flames will occur regardless, and unrelated stuff will happen...not that I have anything against unrelated stuff, it's actually kind of fun to read :)
Oh, well, just my 2 cents. Well, so it was more like $3.50...sorry :)

Flame wars? I don't see any flame wars. Knowing my luck, though, I'll probably start one now or something. We have ideas in mind for improving the content of the message boards, but they aren't done yet. Right now, we have the option to control _extremely_ unruly posting (i.e., posts going up faster than they can be deleted). However, we have only had to do that a few times (temporarily).

I think they mean just, in general, waves of comments like the "The (insert name of calculator mentioned in article) sucks MWAHAHAHAHAHA" arguments that get thrown back and forth whenever a specific calc is mentioned, and the general nonsense like "I got the first comment!"/"You're gay" stuff that gets tossed around not frequently, but frequently enough to say it happens with regularity. I don't know exactly, tho, but that's at least what I meant when I posted my last comment.

P.S. I don't mind those weird comments (they're amusing); I'm just trying to attempt, in my own little (probably confusing) way, to help clear some things up. And for the ticalc members: Don't think you're not doing your job controlling the comments...most of the stuff is harmless and kudos to you guys in general for making this message board in the first place.

I'm hosting the site off my computer and unfortunately I'm running Windows and I have a dialup connection so it's up about 6 hours a day. Try around 4PM Central Daylight Time. Usually, it is up in the afternoon.

Thanks Joe for releasing another shell for the 83, i was getting bored of waiting for another improved work of art. Joe please with your knowledge try to create a good Mario, MortalKombat, or a street fighter the games for the 83 are getting boring but we still got to thank the programmers for actually wasting their time building the programs, thanks

SOS vs ANOVA
Max

Has anyone noticed the new shell called Anova which has been added to the archive?...
I've just finished reading the readme.txt and it promises very interesting features in the next releases!... Perhaps we're bound to see a kind of shell war like on the 85?... In fact this won't really be a war because both shell (or OSes call it what you like) are compatible...

ANOVA seems to be another "Better than AShell".
