Chip8 and SChip8 Emulation on the TI-85
Posted on 22 September 1998, 01:59 GMT

[uChip8 Screenshot]
Andreas Ess of Icarus Productions has released uChip8 v0.1 for Usgard, an emulator for Chip8 and SChip8 programs. Chip8 is an interpreter used in the late 70s and early 80s to program simple video games. SChip8 is an advanced version of Chip8 and was popular in the early 90s on the HP48. Included are a few games such as Brix, Invaders, Tetris, etc. and also a converter utility to convert Chip8 programs.

Does this work on the 86 using Rascall or ASE?

Yes, it does. But if you use Rascall, make sure to set the individual games by pressing [xvar] in rascall, and pressing enter on each game you wish to play.

You need to use xvar. A small problem with Rascall is that it doesn't like external TI-85 levels. To compensate for this, the author used xvar to "set programs that Rascall didn't recognize as levels for TI-85 programs". So press xvar and select the program(s) you want to play. Programs for uChip work the same way. But remember that selected variables take up a lot of memory, so only select a few programs at a time

Well, making an emulator for the HP48 is far too difficult. But there are actually some other often used "languages" by the HP48, so you could make emulators for those too.
The advantage of such emulator proggies is the portability to almost any calculator without any problems. Furthermore, writing programs is pretty simple. Unfortunately, the speed isn't that fast yet.

Problem's screensize: SCHIP8 uses the resolution of 128x64. Thus, only CHIP8 emulation would be feasible on the TI-82/83, I guess.

Still, being able to play the real space invaders on my ti-82 would kick ass

ya might want to try www.davesclassics.com. I know they have a lot of emulation stuff for the computer. Whether or not they have those specific roms or not, Im not sure of.

There were games in the zip files, but it said in the readme file that you could download more games and convert them for use with the emulator.

That sounds pretty cool, but to the programs have to be in .85s format before they can be sent?

No offense (or at least not too much) intended, but, the 92 uses a different processor you fool!

Yes, but so does the HP48. You couldn't use the same code, but it IS possible to write a Chip8/SChip8 emulation.

Andreas, I've got a small request:

Could you remove the delays, (or at least some of them) to make gameplay more smooth on the 86. At least on , it seems sluggish. You could post it as "optimized for 86" or something. Just an idea.

Actually, I was thinking of releasing a new version where you adjust the delays during the gameplay, as not all games seem to run at the same speed somehow...
