Maze-3D v0.4 Beta Released
Posted on 20 September 1998, 23:54 GMT

[Maze-3D Screenshot]
After months of development and beta testing, CLEM has finally released Maze-3D v0.4 Beta for the TI-86. This is a 3D raycasting game similar to Daedalus for the TI-85. There are no enemies in this version, however the gameplay is fast even with grayscale. Also included is a lite version (438 bytes smaller) that is black & white instead of grayscale. Both versions feature three different screen sizes, so the game runs faster if you are willing to sacrifice screen size. If you own a TI-86, this is a must download! (Note: the screnshot displayed is of a pervious version of Maze-3D, however it looks almost the same as version 0.4 Beta.)

Great beta! I can't wait for more levels and textures! Absolutely stunning (Hey, it ain't Quake but what more could you expect from a CALCULATOR!)

I just played it, and let me admit...very nice...it needs enemies though, otherwise the game gets kind of boring, just opening doors and having no idea where you're going..so put some guys in there...CLEM...you hear me?

How are the levels going to work??? How about randomly-generated levels?? I think that would be cool! Great work, CLEM!!

This is the coolest. It looks better than most Ti-92 3D games. I would like to help build level. E-Mail me at Tikki-Lord@Prodigy.Net

Actually, Andreas Ess(I think that's right) ported his game, Daedalus, to the gameboy, but he never released it to the public.

Do you think ticalc.org could post a screen shot? I don't own a TI-86 but i'm thinking about buying one and would like to see all it has to offer.

Invalid file format?
David Phillips

Does anyone else have any trouble getting any of CLEM's programs to run on the TI86EMU? I think it may have something to do with him using a mac, but I'm not sure. When it is loaded into the emu, the size is ~36k, which isn't right...

If no one has an answer, I'll look at with a hex editor and figure it out.

I thought that TI86 EMU was a awesome program but it is piece of crap program. In the doc of the program i read that you cant play greyscale. Hence Maze 3d wont work. Lot of other programs dont work either, even basic!!! A small basic prog that i loaded turned into 35,943 bytes. Jeeshh!!

Hope that helps!

Just a couple of questions for the future development of the game:

1) Have you thought about also having the 2nd key to open up the doors

2) How many different types of enemies?

3) Will you just have to dodge the enemies or will you have any weapons?

4) If you do have any weapons, will there be more than one?

5) Will the weapons have limited ammo?

6) Will there be set levels, random levels, and/or external levels w/ level editor?

7) To die, will you have to be hit once, or multiple times?

why is it that if no key is pressed while in the maze, the view backs up like the person is walking backwards? is this a bug that will only be in the beta, is this done on purpose for some reason, or is my calc just screwy?

I tried what you said, and the view didn't back up. There is something called the "down-left bug patch that was written by Matt Johnson. It is in the ticalc archives. Use it and see what happens.

Re: Re: Re: Maze-3D v0.4 Beta Released

the program you referred me to is merely an interrupt handler for the "down-left" bug on the 86. im not talking about the game freezing when down and left are pressed at the same time. start a new game in either the grayscale or lite version of the game. move toward the first wall (or any wall for that matter) and let go of the buttons. on my calc it seems like the person (of the 1st person view) is walking backwards. it only stops when he backs into a wall. am i alone on this one? my calc may just need a good ol' mem reset.

I guess you are alone. I tried what you said and the view stayed in place. I thought that the bug patch was for another thing, sorry.

Just one question: What is the "down-left" bug?

     22 September 1998, 18:27 GMT

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Maze-3D v0.4 Beta Released
Justin

the "down-left" bug is a bug in the ti86 (may be fixed in newer rom versions, but im not sure) that freezes the calc for as long as the down and left buttons are pressed. this occurs in the regular os also. try graphing a function and press the two keys while it is graphing. the nonmoving run indicator denotes the temporary freeze. this can easily be fixed in an asm game using an interrupt handler, but some games do not use this, especially older ones.

Down Left bug is a bug that freezes the program when down and left buttons are pressed at the same time. I use it to my vantage, and it really works like the pause function.
Quite few games have this bug in it.

Clem: This game is great. Only three minor prob:
1. A little too easy, huh? The very first time i played it, it took me 2 min. to pass. Everytime after that, 45 sec, tops.
2. The walls in the maze are so not smooth(and i hope i'm not alone on this one, don't see anybody else mention it)
3. Too Much grayscale. Especially the wall with the black square in the center of the wall.
cut down on grayscales will enable the game to run faster.

p.s. Clem, this game is the best 3D game i've ever seen on a TI. Thank you very much for developing this game.

Here are MY thoughts:
1) It is only BETA 4!!!! It will have enemies and weapons(the same as in Daedalus).
2) I like the walls, especially the brick wall texture.
3) If you don't like grayscale, get the lite version(black & white)!!

Backwards bug
Matt Tandy

The first BETA of this program did the same thing for me. I haven't been able to explain it, nor has CLEM been able to find it. It seems to have something to do with other programs you have on your calculator. Reset your mem and try it again. That worked for me!

Clem, thanks for the awesome game.
