How much is that DAWG in the window? Free!
Posted by Michael on 11 April 2006, 00:29 GMT

[DAWG] Kirk Meyer has made his flash application DAWG now freely available. Previously this application was sold on the TI Online Store for $7. DAWG is a spell checker for the TI-83 Plus series. It contains a database of over 40,000 words, including my personal favorite, platypusary. In addition to simply checking the spelling of American English words, it can find anagrams and assist in the solving of crossword puzzles.

Update: It should be mentioned that TI flash applications are now free as well, including ones that were previously $7 on their online store.

For 83+ SE or 84+ owners, it shouldn't be too much trouble; but for the 83+, you'll be using more than half of your archive!

Yeah, I have a 84+ and I'm downloading this if for no other reason than I have nothing better to use my archive space for. I doubt I'll need to use a spellchecker, anagramer, or crossword puzzle solver while I'm using my calculator, but you never know. Looks cool anyways.

Thanks for the kind gesture Kirk!

I've been kicking myself ever since I lost that version I downloaded when it was free before... (lost due to HD reformat; only had an 83+ at the time, so it only got loaded whenever I needed it, as 96kb is a rather large memory demand)

And, about a month ago, I was wondering what to do about it, especially since it had magically disappeared from the online store...

I simply assumed it had gone the way of all the other pay for apps...But this is exciting!

Thanks. :)

Actually, TI's no longer selling apps, and their previously for-sale apps are now downloadable on their site. DAWG should also be appearing on there for free "soon" (TI kind of soon).

Any chance they'll do away with that signature crap now they're no longer selling apps? Or release the freeware signing keys for the non-83+ calculators?

I noticed quite a while ago (maybe a year or two) that a lot of TI-89 Flash Apps that used to require payment were inexplicably available for free now. I wondered about that myself.

They probably decided to give the apps out for free because of the new calculator coming out.

Murphy's Law? Anything that can go wrong will? Not sure how that applies...

I assume you paid for it because you wanted to use it at the time when you purchased it, and therefore have had usage of the product during a time when it wasn't available for free.

In any case, I have no way to track who bought copies nor to offer refunds if I were so inclined. Everything was processed by TI.

don't like it. keeps clashing with symantec internet security spyware/adware scanner. i don't like errors and warnings. i just copy stuff to msword and then use that spell checker or put a "(sp?)" after it.

That's one reason Norton sucks- it sometimes fights with other programs. Not to mention it will crash your game or movie to tell you that your virus defs have been updated, and that it throws a fit should you want to disable it for a few minutes.

When ur subcription expires try McAfee--much better. It doesn't do any of that crap, and its way more user friendly. They don't rip you off on remaining subription time when you renew either.

Yeah, I've had problems with Norton too. I hate the dumbed-down interface - if you disable it, and check the control panel, it shows that the system is in 'critical condition', and tells you to click a certain link to fix the problem (which reactivates it, of course).

McAfee does that same kind of stuff, though, and it really slows down your system and makes it unstable (at least for the older versions, I'm not sure about the newest ones). I've heard AVG is the best...

But back on topic, this seems like the Windows Vista of TI calcs. They announce a new calc with tons of new features and that's just way more advanced in general, and then say it's not going to be released for a while while they finish it.

Actually I have tried AVG and although it's good, it doesn't provide as good protection as McAfee does. McAfee has the ability to detect new viruses that have not been added to the definition list yet, and scans more types of compressed files than AVG. (Which actually I have tested the two scanners with a test virus so that "better protection" is based on the results of my test, not my opinion). I have been using McAfee for about a year now and it hasn't ever seriously choked my system or made it unstable. If the unstability issue is that it seems like it has frozen when scanning compressed files, that is simply because it does not have a progress indicator, and it just takes it a minute or two to scan compressed files.

Maybe the newer versions *are* better, I'm just remembering how horrible it was when I was using it back around 1998-2001 with Windows 95.

Takes up too much space for me (space on screen, not memory). I just copy over from Google search ("did you mean...") or OpenOffice.

However, you can just hide them when not in use. Click View-->Toolbars and check/uncheck the toolbars you want.

Who cares if it's internal or not? It's better to have extensions that add extra functions than to make it bloated by having it all built in IMO.

That especially applies to stuff you have to pay for. For example, with handheld video games, the PSP has all kinds of stuff built in, raising the price. The DS has most of those features coming out soon externally, so you can have it if you want, but don't have to pay for it if you don't want that particular feature.

Opera 9 doesn't pass the Acid2 test. It still renders the smily face incorrectly.
The Acid2 test is a load of rubbish anyway. Anyone here could write a browser that rendered the Acid2 test correctly, if they just made sure to support the features the Acid2 test requires well enough.
