Harvest Moon Released for 83+
Posted by Michael on 15 September 2004, 01:30 GMT

[Harvest Moon]Have ever you longed to own a grand country farm where your neighbors all own shotguns, chew straw, and ride tractors on their half-mile long driveways? You can now simulate farm management, at least, with Harvest Moon for the 83 Plus (but not SE). With this game that provides fantasy-world farming experience, you can grow four exciting crops: Turnips, potatoes, tomatoes, and corn. The goal of course is to have a successful farm and earn money. Unfortunately, the always-exciting tool of slash and burn agriculture doesn't seem to be an option.

I think Michael is losing his mind. I also long for a regular 83 version. That is all.

Follow-up from MV: "My defense is that one cannot lose what one never had to begin with. Like the ticalc.org visitors think, I'm just a typewriting monkey."

Yeah, you're a typewriting monkey...I think MV is more of a typewriting snail...or maybe slug... :)

Slugs and snails can't use a computer through physical restrictions, but MV obviously can.

No slash and burning? Awww... sounds pretty fun though... Seems like all these games that are featured are for 83+.....Their BASIC games archives have over 2000 files....!!! Too bad I don't have an 83...

Why not SE? That seems odd.

From the readme, it sounds like the author has such tight LCD timings that the 5-8 extra clock cycles required on the SE will cause display glitches.

I think in the Readme, he also said that he was planning on slowing this down and releasing a SE version.

Wait, I just tried it on an SE, and it did fine. I guess he was talking about when you exit the program. Several random dots and lines pop up on the screen. I just pushed ON to get out of this. If this can screw up my calc, somebody please tell me so I don't do this again.

If you read the review, there is a program that helps it work. I played it for a week before I got bored. On my Ti-84+ SE. Of course.

My, God. This game was pointless on the GameCube, what makes it less pointless here? I would say that it is even more pointless here, because at least on the GC, the graphics were better.

Oh, why not on the SE?

i suggest you get the rom of the original HM. you might just fall in love with it... it's really a -and i hesitate to say this- cute game and it's simply a pleasure to play, even if it isn't a pleasure to beat. There's some element of fun in waking up early every day to talk to and brush happy cows, collect eggs from and feed the chickens, water your plants, and collect herbs on the mountain. Plus with the natural disasters, wooing element, and thourough dynamic plot, harvest moon is a surprisingly successful game. it's a quaint little programming project and a waste of time. I'm not even going to try the 83 version; all the fun of HM was in the excellent gpx and colorful environments.

You get the original ROM of Harvest Moon? That doesn't make sense. I think HM stands for something related to calculators. Oh and by the way, what does HW3 mean?

there's a vaguely illegal process called game emulation, in which the ROM of the game cartriges (the original harvest moon was on SNES) is read into a computer and converted to the file type SMC (for SNES). Once you have all the game data in the SMC file, you can run it through a SNES emulator, or a program made to run these SMC files like the real SNES would. So if you download the rom from the internet and have an emulator like ZSNES, you can play the game using your keyboard as a controller. Becasue the emulator is computer based, it usually has much more features than the console itself, like key mapping, screenshotting, motion capture, save states, and video filters. If anyone wants the harvest moon rom, email me.

well, it's only illegal if you don't have it yourself. And, the older a game gets, supposedly, the less "illegal" it becomes. That's why you can find ROMs of some really old games like Final Fantasy 1 so easily.

technically, under the DMCA, if you own it you can have the rom. one site does this. they buy a ton of old games, upload the roms to their server, and charge to STREAM them off the server to a proprietary client. since the client absolutely can't see the file without being connected, it's not illegal. Nintendo frowns upon this, though, and generally has a foot to stand on if they really want to sue you. and about the "less illegal" thing... i'd say that as the games get old, nobody cares any more. of course, things can come back like link to the past, so licensers do keep an eye on old games.
