I don't think makeing sound programs is very practical because only a select few have the hardware on their calculator nessesary for sounds. I think programmers should use their efforts elsewhere.

Not really, all you need are a set of normal headphones like you would use with a discman. Go down to Radio Shack and buy a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter and plug it into your link port. Voila! Sound!

I made mine by following these instructions:

A good method for getting sound from your calculator is to build speakers. Speakers are very easy to build, and the parts only cost about $4. To build them you need:
3/32" (2.5mm) Phone Plugs (RadioShack Cat. No. 274-289C)
Mini Pzo Buzzer (RadioShack Cat. No. 273-064)
Then follow these easy steps:
Unwrap one of the Phone Plugs and unscrew the black cap.
Unwrap the Mini Pzo Buzzer and thread the wires through the small hole of the black cap, so that they come out the other end.
Thread the black wire through the small hole in the Phone Plug.
Thread the blue and red wires through the bigger hole on the Phone Plug.
Screw the black cap back on the Phone Plug.
Open the game with sound on your calcultor, then plug the speaker into the link port. Hear the sound!

Well, make sure that you plug the headphones or turn on the speaker AFTER you atart the application w/ sound. If you plug it in before, it makes ur calc choppy, mebe the app ur using doesnt support sound...

You should put resistors between the headphone and calc. Any resistor is fine but there are two things the resistors must have:
A minimum of 2,5KiloOhm
Both resistors must be the same (so not a 4KiloOhm and a 3KiloOhm or something like that)

Put the resistors between the Left + (Tip) and the Right + (Ring). The - (Ground) can be connected directly.

Make also sure you don't use a Mono 2,5mm Plug. Only 2,5mm Stereo. Also don't shortcut the Left + and Right + to think you're smart and only have to use one resistor. If you like Mono you can shortcut the two resistors and the headphones side. (not at the calcs side) This is cause if you connect something with a lower resistance than 2,5KiloOhm the lines are pulled low and the calculator thinks data is sended over the linkport and freezes (actually it is in a LinkRoutine and doesn't handle the keyboard/TI-Gui anymore).

Everyting (Crashing and Freezing) is resolved if you use the two resistors between calc and headphone.

It didn't work. I bought that converter thing from Radio Shack, but it doesn't work with any of my speakers. It turns the calc on when plugged, slows down it, and the best that I can made it do is to hear some buzzes when I press a key, like some sort of piano. But I can't make it play sound. Is there anything I can do with that converter to make the calc play sound, since I already wasted my money on that?. I don't care if I have to break it.

I sorta did a combination of the two above processes.
The BEST sound (I think 2 channels) Comes when you get the 1/8" to 3/32" converter. Get your headphones/speakers (1/8", the kind used by PC Speakers[NO! NOT THAT PITIFUL BEEPER INSIDE THE MACHINE OUTDATED 10 YEARS AGO!] or Discmans.) Yhe Problem is, it falls out a lot. The cordless phosne headsets only give 1 channel sound,so then Piano83 has to make that weird alternating sound.

Read my story about resistors (at this page a little higher). You should use a quality headphone. Not those cheap headphones that you can buy in airplanes or get for free when you buy a new walkman/discman. They usually need a big amplifier (which a TI hasn't got) and even then give poor sound.

I am currently working on NAPSTER 83 for the TI-83 Plus. It will play music, have your music stored in a list, and you will be able to send and recieve music. Should be done in a few weeks. Pictures not yet available. Visit website for more information. Thanks. Email me @ OaSiS3003@Yahoo.com for questions or anything.

It is possible but doesn't excist yet.

It is also possible to play Stereo Wave files. Only nobody has made such a program because Stereo Wave means that the file is twice as big when Mono. Most people don't like it because the TI-Ram is already 28kByte and even if the sound is Stereo it will never sound as nice as a real Walkman/Discman.

But the TI-83(+) has two DataLines. You can produce easy Midi like sound with 2 channels. If you want more there has to be something like the WaveRoutine has that swaps the channels fast High and Low so there is something between 0 volt and 6 volt. (if you use only 2 channels you only have to put a dataline high and low at the frequence of the tone you would like to hear.)

But MIDI has 16 channels and I also think it is too much and too big for a TI. Also so many channels is so much it probaly will result in poor sound. If you like music buy an Discman or MP3-Player.

I am making a game with sound. Please check out Upcoming 3D game in ASM for TI83(+) at the Upcoming TI83+ games. (page 47)

How would you make the program play the sounds? The only thing I can think of is to send variables with different values (using send), but I'm not sure if that does it.

Making sound can only be done in asm.
To do this it is easy:
All you need to do is change the status of the link port. To make it high:
ld a,D0HD1H
out (BPORT),a
to make it low:
ld a,D0LD1L
out (BPORT),a
To make a sound, you make the link port high then low for the duration of the beep.
To change pitch, you loop the code making it high then the code making it low.
Stereo sound is a bit more tricky (ok, I don't know how!)
Have a look at some code to get a better idea!
Or, for Basic users, use one of those sound libs.
(I wrote one but it is really naff.)

Stereo Sound is easy

The Port has two DataLines (Left and Right)

ld a,D0HD1H let the two DataLines stay high (IDLE)
ld a,D0LD1L makes the two DataLines low (Mono)

ld a,D0LD1H makes the 1st DataLine low
ld a,D0HD1L makes the 2nd DataLine low

You can use a 2 mono Routine and use the one after the other. Load the registers in temporary places (8265h - 8500h).

If you want more information about Stereo, E-Mail me
