Re: Do you carry your calculator\'s manual with you?

FINALLY, A new survey!!!!! Thank you for finally listening to us.

By the way, this is kinda off the topic but I found something really wierd with my ti-86. I had just replaced my batteries and turned it on. After a couple of days, I accidently pressed "enter" while pressing "on". It came up with a message that I had low batteries. But when I pressed "on" by itself , no message came up. Plz tell me if this is just a glitch on my calc or if you also get the message too.

What kind of Ti do you have? My 89 doesn't do that...

Big difference there... *sarcasm*

P.S. sarcasm is not the weapon of the weak-see above-it is only weak when someone weak wields it.

Me and my two cents, and their two cents, and their two cents...

maybe that depends on the ROM version... I know that 1.6 is very stable. that's what my 86 is, and it only crashes if i am trying to emulate some funky program for the 85 Rigel or somethin... i have never seen the low battery message when my batteries were new, so i don't know what's goin on there. probably a glitch/messed up easter egg...

I don't think so. I have a ROM 1.6, and I get random low bateries messages sometimes. Also, I've had my calculator crash while running basic programs. (I had to pull the bateries.)

Your calculator may have become temporarily unstable. I suggest that you reset your RAM. This usually fixes problems like that (and believe me, I've had too many problems 'like that' on my TI-83 Plus). For the TI-83 Plus, in fact, it recomends reseting the RAM after you've replaced the batteries with new ones. By the way, I got that from *the users manual*! :)

I've had someone else tell me about that. I have info on it at the URL above. BTW, what rom version is your TI-86?

Well, I start to see it when I get to 5 and 6. Seems early. My 86 crashes about every other day. But then, it's probably cuz I'm always running Mario (Ben Mickle) or YAS, which has a terrible APD bug. When you are in a program, and the APD goes, the whole thing locks up. :(

~SirNonya.

BTW, does anyone know of any good archiving or memory recovery progs for the 86?

Kirk Myer made one. Click the link above. It is version .91, and doesn't work on my calc, but it might on yours.

Can anybody make a Fake Mem Clear for 89? (my math teacher always resets it - that's only thing she can do on a calc)

Reply to this comment    22 March 2001, 01:42 GMT

teachers love to reset calculators dont they :)

just archive your important stuff so you can recover it after the memory is cleared

I know it does work if you take out batteries, but if you go to MEM -> RESET -> All Memory , it won't work!

Erhm...the "physics" of programming, make it difficult if not immpossible to set up a "fake" reset for a TI-89. Simply because of the way programs are ran on the 89. So, it is going to be difficult to make a calculator look like it's reseting if your teacher is the one doing the reseting. Now, I can think of two solutions to creating that program.

First you make a program that displays and runs a reset screen, that looks like a calculator's reset screen (better hope your teacher dosn't double check it). The problem with this is that you have to run the program before handing the calculator to your teacher (your "opening" the reset screen before they reset the calculator because your a "nice" person). This means it won't work if your teacher resets the calculator behind your back, or double-checks the reset.

The next way is that you disable the reset function entirely with a hack of some type. As I'm not a assembley programmer, and I have no idea if this can be done in basic; I don't have the skill to do this.

Annother thing, if that calculator belongs to you, your teacher shouldn't be putting their hands on it in the first place.

i have much experience with event hooks and it would be very easy to write a program that detects the memory keypress.

Ehh...
It might be difficult, but I believe there are two ways of achiving a fake mem reset. One way would be to patch the ROM of the calc, and hack the section of code that tells the mem reset proceess what to do. At the same time you could make it work on if you pressed a "secret key" when you wanted to reset. All this would take a lot of effort, and be kinnda dangerous for your calc if you screw up.

Another way is to get an os that allows you to hide files when you look at the prog menu, and show that to your teacher ("look I reset it")

I just thougt of something - does anyone know if the xpander works w/ a ti 89? cause then you'd be able to reset the calc + retransfer everything back.

Y'all are making this too complicated. What I do is keep my 89 in my pocket, let my teacher clear my 83+ and switch it with my 89. My teacher doesn't notice. If you're afraid she will (or don't have multiple calcs) barrow a friend's calculaor for class. Let your teacher clear one and swap it for the other.

Hiding programs only noticeable in 'var-link' menu and if teacher looks into the 'mem' menu, she can see that there are something stored in there. (also, she might want to reset it just to make sure there's nothing in memory)

On my 83+ I have migrage, which protects the memory screen and keeps you from accessing it, which means the teacher can't reset it, and it even needs a password to disable mem. blocking. My 92+ though, thats a different issue, it can't easily fake clear, but that doesn't matter for me, most of my dumbass teachers don't know what the fuck it is. My math teacher is the only one who knows what it is and doesn't think it's a laptop. But she doesn't know how to reset it.

All versions of the 86 do that whenever it is off, [enter] or [down] is held, and [on] is pressed.

I tried this on some of the 86's at school, and indeed, some did have this problem. This is because they have an older software version. The newer ones don't have this minute porblem. When someone finds a way to flash an 86(it's physically impossible without replacing hardware), get a new rom version. I have both a 86 and a 89. My 86 has more games, but my 89 has higher quality games.

On my 86, rom version 1.5 , It does it with several keys, I discovered this about a year and a half ago. The keys are as follows: Down Arrow+ON, Negative+ON, Enter+ON, and thats all I've found so far.
