My parrents bought my TI-83 because my school said to get one. Later, I ended up buying a TI-89. Get the TI-89 (I love mine). :)

I bought my 89 from the money I got from selling my 86.
I bought my 86 after I destroyed my 85.
I don't remember how I got my 85. I really don't. It's very sad.

Italians? tell that to me :-) I got a Casio 9850G 3 days before math exam in 1998, I went to brazil specially to buy that calc because the prices here are too expensives(300% real value or more!). Then a friend of mine showed me a HP48 and I became a HP user, my dream was to have an HP calc. Well, my mother bought me a Ti89 during his holydays in USA because she didn't find the HP49, and then I bought the HP at amazon.com... the thing is that I bought it as a gift, to avoid problems with Uruguayan custom.(amazon's orders as gifts don't come with the bill info!! cool!!). Here in Uruguay you can't buy things with a value of more than 50 dollars, if you overpass this limit, then bad taxes will be aplied... And the best thing is that I didn't like the HP49(really really bad...:-( and I have it on sale now. 250 U$S is my offer, and I'm planning buying a Sega dreamcast and many games with that money.(at amazon, obviously ;-) I have the Casio on sale too(that's another history ;-)

174 U$S at amazon.com. 360 U$S at any store here. That's why I sell my HP at 250. Online shopping is not very frequent in Uruguay, so, my offer is great in a country where a Casios average cost is 250 U$S or more. That's the problem with my country, the lack of competitors, Casio is the only know calc here, if someone could enter TI calcs to Uruguay he's welcome! He would help making competetion, and reduce the calc prices in the market :-)

That's really expensive. I'd just order it from some US store and have a new one shipped. How are you going to sell it though? Amazon.com has a large market for selling calculators but the price on the internet, as you saw, is much lower than your price.

Yes, I know, but that's the deal. Maybe I'm being too bad with my own people... but 250 is a very good price here and anyone will be happy even if they know it's still high. The calc is new, I mean, I read all the manuals and I know how to use it and everything but I only used it 2 or 3 weeks. And most uruguayans don't think it's posible to buy online, for many reasons. The most important is that most of online shoppings like amazon.com only ships within the U.S... Means that you will need to contract a P.O box in Miami for example(I have one,Netbox World). If you don't know about the "gift" trick, then you must pay the import taxes... Then if your order comes broken you will need to return it, something that many guys here thinks it's imposible... buying online is not very popular in Uruguay...

Is HP-49 some sort of wonder calculator for $250 that can also cook you dinner and fix your old,dumb TI-89?

About a year and a half ago, I conned my parents into thinking I needed agraphing calc for school. They went out and bought me a (shiznitty) $30 Casio 9850gfx. Within a year I had thrown that piece of (shiznit) up against a wall, and cracked it's screen.
In the US, you can get a crappy casio for $30 on sale, but why wouldyou want a calc with no ASM or other compileable language? After that damn casio was broken (if you don't beilieve me, i'll send you a part from it) I went and bought a ti89. i think that it is better than a gameboy.

C'mon, a TI83+ is better than a gameboy. Here's why:
1) It's only $40 more (20 more for calc and 20 for gl)
2) You can write your own BASIC programs
3) You can write your own ASM programs
4) Games off the internet aren't $10 each
5) Multipule games at a time
6) MirageOS
7) Allowed in school, if not in class
8) IT DOUBLES AS A CALCULATOR!!!!

hey, you did pretty good... I got my first Casio when I was in 7th grade... cause my calc just got stolen and I need one for the SAT, which was the following day... then that one got stolen... so I bought another casio 9850 with some christmas money... heres the exciting part... My mom's boss bought a TI-82, and he couldnt figure out how to use it and didnt bother to read the instructions, so he gave it to me... then some other unsuspecting kid left his TI-82 outside of his PE locker... hehe... mine now... then another kid left his on his desk a few days later... now I have 3 TI-82's... then one of my friends needed me to fix his computer, but he didnt have any money, but he did have a broken TI-85... so he gave me that as payment, and I fixed that one too. so its mine now... (OK, my backpack is getting very heavy now...) when one of my friends teachers wouldnt let him use his TI-89, he let me borrow it for the remaing part of the year... so I am a very happy and lucky calculator (owner?)... thus, now I have 5 calculators in my backpack..., if anyone has a TI-83, 86, or 92 they would like to give to me, it could be helpful in completing my collection of free TI-calculators... hehe mail me...

I hate people that steal calculators. It's really bad at my school. I know a kid that is on his 3rd ti-89 because his last 2 got stolen.

The people at my school steal calcs all the time. My parents got me and my bro ti-86's, then someone stole my bros so we then got 89's(i have 86 and 89 now).
My friend also found a 82 and gave it to me.

I know someone at school who has 2 86's and a 89, he steals them i believe.
He uses an 86 and an 89 at the SAME TIME on math tests and the TEACHER DOESNT CARE!!!!

Why would the teacher care? If you've got 'em I think you should be able to use them. Just because he has more he should be penalized doesn't sound right to me.

Hmm. You think he'd watch after the second one a bit more carefully. I don't know anyone at my school who has had their calculator stolen but I bet it has happened sometime. I usually keep mine in my backpack and don't leave it unattended, because while I don't think anyone would take it if I did, if it happened to me I would be really ticked off.

It's much worse at our school. I keep my calculator duct taped to my calf at all times, and if I have to use it for any reason, I have a friend watch over my shoulder to make sure nobody jumps me. If anyone leaves a calculator at my school unattended for more than 30 seconds, it's gone. Our administrators catch kids all the time with up to seven calculators. Anyone who even owns a calculator is suspect. It's a sad state, my friend.

It's not usual to stole calculators here, but I remember a friend of mine many years ago, he got a Casio 7000 something, and during the brake at school someone entered the classroom and broke it. When we entered the class, the calc was totally distroyed: the screen broken, the buttons were lying in the floor, etc... really really bad...

I have a means of keeping my TI-89 from being stolen, aside from that fact that nobody steals calculators in my school, I keep it in my pocket all day. That way I know where it is, and always have easy access to it.

Yeah, that's what I do sometimes. It isn't very comfortable though :D

The situation is extremely bad at my school as well, i've had 3 83s stolen now, and now that i have a 92, i'm overly protective. i bought a special case that insterts into my math binder that will hold my 92, and that way i don't have to worry.

I've considered doing this. However, I'm the only one in my [small] school with a 92, and everyone knows it; so I really don't worry that much.

you know, there is that thing on the back of the calc that says name(it's in a box on the top if you didn't know...), that's where you should engrave your name on it... after having my 86 stolen from me, i bought an 89(for 60$ at office max -- i knew one of the cashiers...), i engraved it right when i got home....

People at my school used to always calcs. Most of the time they would steal them from a store though and sell them for like 20 bucks. It's not so bad now (that was two years ago). Too bad they quit, I wasn't interested in them then but am now. I wouldn't mind getting a ti89 for 20 bucks. When they did steal them from school, they would just scratch the name and serial number off the back. Sucks to be the person they stole if from. Back on the subject though, I "found" my ti82, my sister gave me my ti83, my friend gave me my ti83+ (he gave it to me because it was stolen anyway and he had just bought a stolen ti86), and I just bought a Ti89 for $85.

Well the serial number on the 89, at least, is stored internally as well and can't be so easily scratched off.

My name was engraved on mine and it still got stolen, the next 89 I bought I spraypainted it in gold. It lasted all of half and hour before it got stolen again. My school is full of Winston-smoking, Ford Ranger-driving, Mullet-growing WHITE TRASH!!!

why dont you just put a password on it with a program? that way if someone steals it, its useless to them

I had a doors password set but I am sure the culprit just reset the calc and then loaded all the games on it. That's right games, anyone stupid enough to steal a calculator from someone doesn't want it so that they will get better grades on their math tests. I forgot to add something else to my description of most of the students at Floyd Central HS, they are all related to eachother so if you make one mad they go and tell their cousins and suddenly the entire school is out to get you. Its amazing how fast your locker combination gets scratched on the door and how long it takes for the office to change it (3 days for me, the guy that changes them was on vacation). In my opinion the whole state of Indiana has a conspiracy against me in order to prevent my happiness. Evidence shows that my family is in on the plan as well.

Lets see here... I got my first calc which was a TI-82 =). then about 5 months later i went with a TI-85. this was all in 8th grade, then in 9th grade my TI-85 was stolen, so i got a TI-86... then about 3 days later I found the guy that stole my 85 and got it back =). then my TI-86 was stolen. which i replaced with a new TI-86. Then my friend sold me his TI-85 for $20 (couldent pass it up, was planning on selling it on ebay). that gave me 2 TI-85's and 1 TI-86. then I bought my TI-89 my 10th grade year, I had another TI-85 stolen that year, which i was able to recover later that week. I'm known as someone who can get you games and the idiots seem to come to me to get their games on a stolen calc which seems to be mine. so at last count I have 2 TI-85's 1 TI-86, and 1 TI-89. btw anyone want to buy an 85 or 86 =)
