It's basically a monopoly....
John Wyrwas  Account Info

The teachers request "a graphing calculator, preferably a ti-83". So, knowing nothing about graphing calculators, we all buys ti83s. And they're "suggested" for the SATs too.

You got the 83 for $26 Canadian? How much was the 92? Was the 92 a plus? If the answer to that question was yes, and the answer to the previous question was >$100, please e-mail me @ misteryorp@hotmail.com.

Most schools sugest TI 83+ for Geometrey, but the fact of the matter is the course should be able to be tought without it, ifit's tought correctly. Anyways... The point I wanted to say is... Most schools sugets the Ti 83+'s because TI 89's and TI 92's are not allowd on Calc exams, or APCalc Tests/Exams, and last I knew, they weren't allowd on the SAT's, mainly because they'll do the job for you, you don't have to actually do any work.

So... Most students at High School's buy TI 83+'s because one there school sugests it, and two the 89, and 92 are pointless if you can't use them on a test.

One last thing... I know my school, and most schools own at least two class room sets of TI 92's. So students don't have to waste money on them.

I know for a fact that the TI-89 can be used on the AP Calculus exam as well as the SAT's. The TI-92 CANNOT be used on either, because it has a QWERTY keyboard and thus is not allowed.

I apologize for being wrong about the TI-89, I know it's not allowd on any Calculis with in my school, mainly because it is like the 92 and will do the problems for you, so there is no real thinking involved, the 92 is indeed banned because of the qwerty style keyboard. Sorry about the 89 thing, I know at my school it isn't allowd.

I used the TI-89 on the AP Calc BC and AP Physics exams last May, the PSAT October, and will use it on the SAT and the AP Chem exam late on this school year. I have heard tons of people claiming that it was banned but this is mainly speculation that turns into rumors. Go to www.collegeboard.com/ap and see which calcs are allowed. The 89 is allowed, as it has no QWERTY keyboard. The 89 is a lot better on the AP too. Only a few people in my class had 89's at the start of the year in AP Calc BC, but by the end of the year, at least half a dozen who didn't have them bought them, in addition to their other calcs, because they are so much better. I almost got the 86 but did some research and decided to go for the 89. I am very glad that I did, because I would have been sorry winding up with a worse calc and possibly wanting to get an 89 in addition.

I am considering buying an 89 or the HP 48G, I'm not sure though, I keep debateing, although to be honest I really want a 92, the only thing is I have to be realistic because of the calculus thing. The 89 and 92 are pretty similar are they not?

Well, if you mean the 92+, that is exactly the same as the 89 plus Cabri Geometry included (you can buy it separately for the 89) and a bigger screen and keyboard. The 92 is like them exact a few things are slightly older and it has less memory but its math is pretty much the same (unless you want FlashAPPS like Cabri Geometry or the Stat app).

well i just took my SAT this last time and i used my 89 and they didnt say anything, but i had to for the ACT 2 weeks later.

u said ur school owns 2 classroom sets of 92's!? all we got are about 1 classroom set of 83's for 4 or so math classes. students who cant afford graphing calcs are always told by the teachers, "well, you'll need to go to teacher x's class, thats where the graphing calcs are today." mabey were just a poor school. mabey yours is rich
oh well

Our school only has a classroom set of TI-80's that noone uses anymore, and we also have a couple TI-83 viewscreens (fun to put games on and play them when the teacher isn't paying attention). They recommend either a TI-83 or a TI-83+ for all math classes Advanced Algebra or higher. Our AP Stat class even uses a book that is designed to be used with the TI-83. I know only 1 person with a Casio graphing calculator, and he is new, so I figured that all would be better than more than half.

Makes sense to me. What other calculator model could they use?

My school is far from rich, LOL. We have two sets that were bought about 5-6 years ago. They are really nice, I go to a high school that is an average school for illinois. It's far from rich, and far from modern technology wise. My understanding of it was, at least in illinois every high school had at least one class set of the TI-92's because of the Geometrey Sketch Pad function on it. I thought though that, that extended far beyond illinois, to most states.

I live in Illinios, probably about an average school money wise. We only got 1 ti-83 for the class. You are living in denial. Just because one school has 2 ti-92 for a class doesn't mean all the other schools in Illinios magically get 2 of their own. Especially surrounding states.

an old 85 is much better than an 83. Since your want to use it on Test you should have got a 86.

It depends on the class. For calculus, the 86 is the best calc (if you aren't allowed to use 89's), but for statistics, the 83(+) is the only way to go. That's why I have both of them.
