And no geometry, smaller screen and no QWERTY keyboard. The TI-89 also has too little battery capacity.

Well, yeah, that probably comes in handy if you want do write letters in your class, but then why do you need the bigger screen for games then? Not like it's that noticeable.

Really? Mine doesn's seem so, though it's almost new (2 months use), and somehow I do doubt that, but I would thank one who would back that up.

I'll agree with that. I have batteries that will run my 89 when they won't run my 85 any more. If that has any pertinance to anything.

Although it seems that the batteries will last for a long time, it also seems that when the batteries get to a certian level of energy left, they no longer let you transfer programs to your 89...has any1 else noticed that?

It is that way for the 83+. When batteries are low, sometimes it will send half of a program over, and then cut off.

For the TI-89 to transfer a ROM or something, it takes time, so it checks the battery power before it sends to make sure it can finish completely.

Yes, that's right. And It’s not only because it’s a long process. Writing in archive memory consumes more energy, when I upgraded my 89 to ams2.03, batteries died completely. (the calc rewrites all, that’s 1Mb or more).

Well, the 89 uses AAA batteries, and the 92+ uses AA batteries, which IMHO it really needs with the power consuming (compared to Z80 calcs) hardware such as the 68k.

I'm not particularly fond on spanish, but I don't dislike them either. I guess we don't like them because they ruled us more than once. I don't like them because a lot of them think we should understand them, which we do, being one of the more lenguage-apt countrys, and don't give a rat's ass about what we say. But I don't descriminate, though, it was just a joke Laura, because many people even in Europe think we're a part of Spain, and actually that is also somewhat our fault... But that's seriously Off-Topic.

TI-89, TI-83+ are all I need
John McCord  Account Info

No geomety? Big deal, if you're using the Ti-89 or Ti-92, you're in a higher math and should know the geometry.

Smaller screen? It's the second largest of all the calcs, behind the Ti-92 of course, and that's not worth complaining about and is definitely not worth the money.

No QWERTY keyboard? Thank God... If it had one I wouldn't be able to use the Ti-89 on my SAT and other such tests. Some may consider it cheating, but because the Ti-89 is allowed and the Ti-92 is not (only because of the QWERTY keyboard), I'll gladly take the Ti-89.

Little battery capacity? Now I know for a fact that isn't true. I got my Ti-89 in early December 1999, and I've used it nearly every day for a solid hour (on the average - calculus does that to a guy). I still have not changed the baterries. I've changed the batteries on my Ti-83 once, and it gets far less use, ya know, because I have a Ti-89.

In other words, don't waste your money on a Ti-92. It's bulkier and more expensive for just slightly better features, but it can't be used when it's really needed. And if you're focusing on gaming, you need to get your priorities straight. Nintendos and Playstations and computers are a helluva lot better for games.

And now to relate to the subject of my message, the Ti-83+. Only a few features make the Ti-83+ necessary: stats and finances. And Flash Apps are being written for the Ti-89, so in a few short months even the Ti-83+ will be useless to me. Well, that's enough from me.

vegetto34 Account Info

"The Keyboard"... so what, if you payed THAT much money you would have at least another calc to take the test... besides they usually supply you with one, like a cheezy 82, lol, and they would have to erase your memory, so whats the advantage??

"The Screen"... your point? the calc's processor still has to deal with more pixels, the reason why the 89 is slower, which is where the 92's are faster, maybe not alot but they are suited better for it.

"The Batteries"... A solid hour and didnt have to change... that's unbeliveable... i had my little 83+ running, just on the cursor, and it almost went dead after that time, imagine that since the 83+ uses less power than a 89...

"The Bulkiness"... Even if that's a word the size makes up for rhe keyboard, screen, and other function keys. Oh, and if you plan to have a Playstation always along with you around school, GOOD LUCK.

"THE TI-83+"... Useless eh.... hard to believe that too. Just mindless gibberish about pointless subjects, since you think that they will be forever lost.. why would you think people would start buying 89's?? Some ppl, unlike me, just plain dont have $150 or so dollars to just spend on a calculator that they would only use for 1 class... some ppl DO more classes but thats not the point I'm stressing. And TI isnt giving up on the 83+.. more apps are coming and wont be out for a few YEARS... the guy who made 83+ ASM Guru, or whatever, is working with TI on 3 or 4 83+ he has. Oh, but the 83+ is going to be useless.......

I owned two Casios before I bought my TI-89 (I still own my CFX-9850g). There is nothing wrong with Casios as far as just using them as calculators. The only problem is that the computer link for the Casios cost more than the calculator and that Casios have no ASM capability. Many of them have color screens which is an advantage when analyzing multiple graphs. A few (and I mean only a few) things are more convenient on a Casio CFX-9850g than on a TI-89. I even benchmarked my Casio CFX-9850g and my TI-89 in two tests (graphing a sine wave and integrating X^2+X+1) and the Casio was actually twice as fast at graphing than my TI-89. My TI-89, as expected, whipped the Casio in the integration test, being almost three times faster. My point is that all calculators have a few advantages over certain other calculators, not that I would ever give up my TI-89 for my Casio just becuase the Casio graphs sine waves faster.

I've had mine since 1995, and only got another calc for compatibility with my classmates. I will continue using it until the ROM is corrupted or it is lost.

(If this sounds fanatical toward the 85, it's not. I just can't think of another way to say it.)

Like I said, slightly better features but not worth the extra cash, so get the Ti-89. And for the record, I do carry my Nintendo 64 around school. It just so happens that about 90% of our teachers enjoy playing Goldeneye with us, thus we are allowed to bring it in most days. And about clearing the memory, they are not allowed to touch a calculator you own. If they suspect you of cheating, they can ask you to put it away and replace it. I know from experience. Any other rebuttals?

I have one:

The N64 isn't as good as a PSX; more variety of games on the playstation...c

Even thought it is technically graphically on a lower level to the N64, it CAN get more polygons/sec., it just can't get the lighting effects or the anti-aliasing (?) the 64 can.

Also, I'd never trade my PSX for anything (except the psx2, which I've reserved btw). Why? Armored Core owns all games, that's why.

Well, I beg to differ. I got my 89 in January (this year), and haven't changed the batteries yet. Since I not only use my 89 for math, but I also use it for programming and engineering classes. All in all, about 4 hours a day (give or take some, generally the former). Day in, day out. Still the same old Duracell. I also love how much memory is available (on my 83, I couldn't have much selection of games at any one time. This is not so on the 89). The fact that the 89 doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard doesn't bother me either (as a matter of fact, I have grown quite accustomed to typing on the little keyboard). I guess you can say I am a proud owner of a TI-89, and no one can change my mind, no matter what.

Do you really think the TI89 is slower than the 92/92+ ? Maybe if you compared to HW2...but pixels is not a reason, since the logic always said when more resolution, more memory you will use and more speed you will need.
I won't be able to calculate limits, integrates, and derivatives in a TI83+ . So, It's almost useless. What is good of the 83+ is the price, and the lot of flash applications you have. And it's better than any Casio out there!!!you're right.

no geometry: there's new flash software that gives most of the geometry features that the 92+ offers
smaller screen: well DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's worth it for thge smaller casing. a huge screen can't fit in my pocket, eh?
no QWERTY keyboard: the only time you'll need to type very fast is when you're programming, and u should use the graph link software of an emu for that anyway
too little battery capacity: oh wow, so it'll only last, like, what, 3 months? that's a whole two dollars off my budget

Qwerty keyboard only for programming: Why the TI89/92 has a text editor? Anyway I don't have problem with the TI89 keyboard, but one of the good things the HP49G has is that you can enter numbers and letters at the same time. Well it's not a problem; you want to enter numbers and letters in the TI89? It’s easy since you don't have to lock alpha to write (you can just keep it pressed). But a qwerty keyboard or a HP49G style keyb would be great to enter numbers and letter at the same time without the use of alpha.

For all you complaining about TI-89 low battery capacity, I have 3 words: Rayovac Rechargeable Alkalines. Sure, it sets you back a couple bucks at when you first buy them, but you never worry about 'em again. (If you can afford the $150 for the 89, 8 bucks for 4AAA's and a charger isn't going to break the bank.) I used my first 4 batteries out in about 8 months (I program alot, plus 3 math/science classes) that they started leaking, so I told Rayovac and they sent me 4 brand new ones free!

Yea, the 89 is a great calculator personaly. I have a HW1 version 1.0 89. I've upgraded it and downgraded and stuck w/ 1.0 cuz you can play any game / program and AU recovers your mem after reset so teachers can officially delete your programs unless they have the AU password. AU still works even if you leave all your batt's out including the little circle one. I also have an 83, 86, and 92. But I think the 89 is the best. and 86 is the second best. 92 is fun but it has its problems. and im not gunna spend $70 to upgrade it.
anyway, to get back on the subject. If TI were to come out hypatheticly w/ a new calc. say TI-87 and TI-88 later (every version of calc have there other version, example 85 and 86) and depending on the new features. we'll say, more memory and is FLASH compadible. Also I wouldn't get it unless it had a 3D function on it and saved my batteries a little longer. so they wouldn't run out so fast. Oh yea. It would be kewl to have the next chip up from th 68k because then you would be able to easily port the games BASIC/ and ASM/ and C from the 89 to the 87/88. It would be the ultamate claculator after the 89/92 series. :)

92s are great, but some less informed teachers will mistake them (in their cover) for a Sega© GameGear®. Besides, the college board tests (AP) don't allow the use of a calculator with a QWERTY keyboard. The 89 has the same programming, is a little faster, and is allowed on all college board tests. Speed Differences
Sean Barnes  Account Info

There is some truth to the TI-92+ being faster. Actually, some TI-89 are faster than others. The difference in speed comes from the two Hardware Versions. HW2 calcs have a 12mhz 68k and the HW1 calcs have a 10mhz 68k. All TI-92+ calcs are HW2 (unless it is a TI-92 with a plus module). All TI-89 calcs made before a certain date (July or August, I think) are HW1. The other thing that makes a difference in speed is the screen size. I don't know if the TI-OS is affected, but games can run faster on the smaller screen of an 89.

Hope that clears things up,
-Sean

The TI-89 and the TI-92+ have the same amount of video memory. Its Just that the TI-89 doesn't display all of it. Take the game Street Fighter 2. On the TI-92+ it dosnt scrollwhen you move. The whole arena is on the same screen. But if it is on the 89 it scrolls as you move. There is no differance in the program exept that it has to scroll around. So the smaller screen does not speed up the calc in every thing that you think it might. However, it is faster.

TI-89'S KICK ACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Logically, the ti92 has a larger screen, so, it has to process more. If the Ti92 has the same screen of the TI89, then it would have the same speed. But the difference between both resolutions doesn’t affect the MC68k, a processor which architecture allows very large screen. To give you an idea, Nec Saturn architecture allows 131x64 as max resolution, that’s why the HP calcs cannot grow up with screen.

Somebody made this claim when the poll was about the most important thing to include in a better calc, and one of the guys who most people consider knowledgable about such things said that the processors were both 10 MHz.
Personally, It doesn't seem like it would be worth-while for TI to change the processor, and if they did, wouldn't that be something they would advertise? As far as I know, the main difference in actual hardware items is some sort of security chip related to the Flash ROM. I hope somebody who knows more about this can offer some incite.

Nice try there. Both versions of 89's have the same 10MHz Motorola 68000 processor. The difference in the two is how they use the screen, as you said. It's all in the routines they use to put pixels on the screen. Nothing different. Plus, one takes advantage of the memory space, allocating it differently for each.
