Yay! It's flame war time on ticalc, @D51 pwn5 j00r c@bl3! I have had better luck on adsl on cable, especially since our cable company only offers one IP and I am too poor to waste cash on a router rather than a cheap hub, when DSL is fast enough (and very fast) for me.

DSL is slow. I get a max download speed of 1.44Mbps (180 KBPS). Average is around 768kbps (96KBPS). The fastest DSL I've ever seen only got around 256Kbps (32KBPS).

Why is it that everywhere I go, people complain that either cable or DSL is slower than the other? It all depends on your location and which package you(or your parents) are willing to pay for from the ISP, for example, my cable ISP offers a cheap 128kbitdl/64kbitul and also offers 1.5mb/s for more... Saying one is faster than the other is pretty ignorant...

(It is possible to get faster than that on cable... it's just the local example...)

No no no... you're missing the point. Whether or not it is ignorant to argue about it does not matter, it is best to let those who choose to be ignorant wallow in their own ignorance every now and then. After all, take away the ignorance from an ignorant person, and what have they got left? Nothing...

It's not an argument if you're simply stating facts. It's called 'fact-based observation'. All I said was that the fastest DSL I'd ever seen was slower than the cable modem I'm using right now. I didn't say something like "DSL sucks because it's always slow"; I actually provided data to back up what I said.

I downloaded a CD image (of Slackware Linux 9.0) in less than an hour (~230KB/s) on my cable connection, which would take a *couple days* to download at 56Kb/s.

I once downloaded a ~700 MB Linux disc image in about 30 minutes on our cable modem. I knew cable modems were fast, but even that amazed me. Of course, you also have to be lucky enough to pick the right server to get speeds like that. A chain is never stronger than its weakest link, of course.

if you have multiple dialup connections in parallel, you can get it (practically) as fast as you want. this applies to DSL also. But not cable, because everyone on the block shares the same bandwidth.

That's the principle behind PLIP. 64 parallel connections, each running at 256 kilobytes/sec = throughput of up to 16384 kilobytes/sec. (16 megs a SECOND!!)

Lol!! sweet... guess you need an OC line to run a dialup server... and latency would be high on plip, wouldn't it, or are dialups low lag low transmission or high lag?

gigabit ethernet? Firewire/USB2?
SHEENmaster  Account Info
(Web Page)

1000mb/s, which is a lot cheaper than 64 parrallel cables, gets 125mB/s.

Even Firewire and USB2 get 50mB/s, 100mB/s for Firewire800.

As for my cable company, they have a pool of bandwidth that everyone shares. Each modem is limited to a specific amount of downstream and upstream. It sucks, but multiple connections would speed things up.

Hm.. with my Cable company, we get our bandwidth allotted much like that, however, if I were to say, "borrow" a friends calbe modem, and hook it up through a special piece of equipment, I can merge the two connections because their total is still less than the maximum for our block...(And as far as I know no-one has been able to 'uncap' their modem in my area...)

Alright... (notice that I am not the brightest member of ticalc.org)
1. It was hooked up when I was at a sleepover, so I'm not really sure. LOL But we are "renting" this modem- it isn't ours. We're going to buy our own just like it so we can cut the cost of the monthly price that we pay, and there's probably other advantages that I haven't thought over yet, too.
2. Um... dunno, but it's fast. ;-) What do you mean, here? Download speed?

Okay let me specify on #2. Do you have a Pentium, Pentium-2, Pentium-3, Pentium-4, or an AMD processor. To find out in Windows, (one way at least) open the run window and type "dxdiag" (no quotes). This will tell you what type of processor you have and approx what speed. (Look at the bottom of the window.

No, I'm not confused, merely curious as to the main way that cable modems are connected to people's computers. I have my modem hooked up through a USB port, although I think that having an PCI Ethernet card would be a heck of a lot faster on the 500 Mhz P-III I'm using. I have (at best) USB 1.1 on my PC and as such I'm limited to 12/Mbps (max.) transfer speed. The 132/MBps to 1/GBps transfer speeds of PCI would much less hinder my modem's 30 to 40 Mbps theoretical maximum download speed.
Oh and if you understood all this, I congratulate you.

Well, I doubt that it is (even theoretically) possible to get even 10 mbps on a cable, T1 is symetrical 1.5 I think, T3 is probably 5 mbps or something, anyone know for sure?

Nah, you'd probably never get more than 10 mbps over cable. And yeah a T1 is 1.5 mbps a T3 is 45 mbps, so perhaps it would be more accurately called T30.

That is the problem with cable. It fluctuates with the amount of people putting strain on the system. Occasionally, I have to reset my DSL modem or ethernet hub, try resetting all of the non-computer equipment, unless you have cable hooked directly up to your computer, not through ethernet (wide phone line end wires).

Well, right now, it's going blazing fast again. It's weird. I think it's because of all the evil college students that flock over here. That's when it slowed down. They're stealing my bandwidth! *cry*
I've also noticed that certain times of the day are better than others. (Like it was with the 56k, except the speed changes are more drastic) In the morning, it's REALLY fast. Past dinner... it's much slower, but still SO MUCH BETTER than the 56k speed. :-D

stealing is right, cable is shared, in populace areas or areas with many people to one cable exchange or whatever, speed drops terribly at peak. On the other hand, all telephone wires are not shared, and hence, DSL ALWAYS R0X0RX!!!
