Well, a transistor works on the current from the emitter (usually ground) to the base. Since we are using this transistor as a switch, we want the emitter->base current to be high. The TI has 'swamp' resistors to prevent this from being too high (90 mA), although you may want to put a 90-100 Ohm resistor if you are worried...
