Generally it will freeze if the link program has not initialized the serial
port correctly.  When idle the voltages on both link port connectors (calc
and link cable) should be about 5v.  If you check you will almost certainly
find that one or both of your link cable lines are at 0 volts.  For some
reason the calc runs slow under this condition, I don't know why, perhaps
the processor enters a tight wait loop to monitor that line for the
communication protocol.

One of them, Cal I think, used to have the com1 and com2 backwards, which
caused no end of problems for people.
