They probably just didn't think that the ROM on the TI's would be able to
go bad.  Someone tested out the HP49G by sending 25,000 volts through the
serial port, and the ROM was still retrievable afterwords, so if TI uses
similar ROM, then they probably do assume that it's not going to stop
working.

Yes I have tried out, and have, an HP49G.  The only thing that I need now
would be a link cable for it, and some info on how to program it.
