 Ok, here is my $.02 on the mouse idea. 
 First, use a PS/2 mouse.  The wires it uses are +3.3V, Gnd, and Clock
(01010101...) and Data from the mouse.  
 Next, obviously, tie the grounds together and put two AA's on the power
wire to the mouse.
 The hard part will be having the TI-xx decode the constant stream of data
from the data line.
