A small point of history - Zilog (the manufacturer of the Z80) designed the Z80
as an improvement of the 8080. The biggest improvement was a set of parallel
registers, though only one set of registers was active at a time. It might be
diagramed like this:

        INTEL Zilog
        ----- -----
        8008
          |
          |
        8080
          | \
          | ----------- Z80
          | |
        8086 |
          | etc.
          |
         etc.

Zilog also developed a set of 16 bit CPU's but they never became as popular as
the
INTEL chips.
