Well, Seems you have the same problem as I.  I think what you did (same
as I) is that by using a standard 2.5mm stereo plug, you might have
damaged the i/o port on your TI-86.  I remember reading somewhere that
the i/o ports on the TI-86 and the TI-83 are less robust than the ones
in the other models...Since a standard 2.5mm plug is tapered, that could
have damaged internal soldering.  Try getting a 2.5mm jack where you
could plug in the calc-calc cable that came with your ti-86, and not
have to use a standard 2.5mm plug.
