Ok, what I would do is this:
Open up the calculator and see if the linkport is loose, mine was, and I
just re soldered it and it worked fine. The next step I would do is find
your 83 if you still have it and give it a whirl. It it works and the 89
doesn't, It's not the link cable. It could be the computer is messing with
the com port, or something or the 89's linkport is too lose for the cable
to make the contact, as that was my friends problem. He fixed it by buying
a new connector from Radio Shack, He picked the normal sized one so he
could build cables for it without the connector, but they do sell the
smaller ones (special order I believe) . To check the computer out, first
check in the bios and make sure the com port is correct. Then remove it in
windows and let it come back. After that, make sure that your software is
not dead, I.E. uninstall it and reinstall it. If all else fails, buy a
black cable :P Hope this helps you.
