The battery check can only detect if the battery level is below
a preset level, it doesn't indicate what the current voltage
is. 

The contrast level is not adjusted by the system if the batteries
are low, only the user can adjust the contrast. Forcing the user
to adjust the contrast to a higher level will hopefully be an indication
that the batteries are runinning down and might need to be changed 
before the low battery message is displayed, why take chances.
