I wasn't sure if it would, because the chip only responds to I2C commands
and after it has been addressed through certain commands.

I already built it on a breadboard and it works great!!! The only thing is
that it is a surface mount chip and I had to etch a carrier board for it.

Why bother, this chip does all that. The chip has a sensor that will
measure the temperature and then the analog output goes through an analog
to digital converter and is stored in a two byte register that is
accessible through I2C routines. Also in the chip is a R/W control
register and two other registers that are also R/W. The chip has an output
that goes active (configurable to either high or low in the control
register). When the temperature drops below the other register, the output
goes inactive. It also has a shutdown mode so it draws even less current.
It's amazing what they can fit into a tiny 8 pin chip.

Oh, and the output of the chip is in degrees Celcius, but today I wrote a
conversion for it in the software.
