A83: Re: Java on 8-bit processors!!!

I saw this on Slashdot yesterday, but didn't really look at it until now.
Their site has that "we are trying to generate a lot of PR but aren't going
to say anything about we are doing" look. Skimming through all of their
stuff, it looked like that it will only run on 80x86 and Sparc CPU's,
although that makes no sense, considering neither of those CPU lines have
any 8-bit processors. It also stated that it took up 70k. Granted, this is
excellent compared to other JVM's available today (JVM...Netscape...shudder)
but is still heavy for a lightweight portable platform like the calc.

Now, I understand the concept and purpose behind Java. Write a single
application and run it unchanged on a large variety of hardware and
operating systems. However, I don't see this as being useful on a portable.
I have heard of efforts to make Java work on the Palm, although I fail to
see the point. PalmOS is basically a fixed target, thus eliminating the
need for a "write once, run anywhere" approach. The same goes for most
other portables as well. Sure, not every portable is the same, but this can
be dealt with and doesn't require something like Java to solve. Plus, you
aren't exactly going to be running the same app on your desktop as on your
Palm, even if it were technically possible.

Just some thoughts...
